Sameera Reddy, Mrunal Thakur, Sonakshi Sinha: Actresses Who Spoke About Body Image Issues and Weight Gain

Several actresses have courageously spoken out about their personal struggles with body image, societal expectations, and fat shaming. These stars have chosen to use their platforms not just to entertain, but to inspire a much-needed conversation around body positivity and self-acceptance. From Sonakshi Sinha recalling how her mother’s repeated comments about her weight affected her, to Vidya Balan’s journey through countless diets and her eventual understanding of her body’s needs, each story sheds light on the pressures women face. Let's take a look at celebrities who have addressed issues of weight gain and body shaming in society.

Sonakshi Sinha

Actress Sonakshi Sinha once opened up about her body image issues and how her mother’s comments on her weight made her feel bad. The Double XL actress shared that such bullying and comments often come from family members during childhood. She believes that this kind of conditioning begins early in life.

“I remember my mother constantly telling me to lose weight. And when somebody keeps saying that to you, the rebellious kid in me would always do the opposite. The day my mother stopped telling me, that’s when it actually struck me that I needed to do something about my weight,” she shared in an interview with Firstpost.

Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan admitted that she had struggled her entire life to become thin. She spoke about consulting dietitians and doctors in an attempt to reduce her weight. She later discovered that the reason she wasn’t losing weight despite rigorous workouts was due to inflammation, which she eventually treated.

Vidya further reflected on “growing up with the label of being a fat girl”. In a conversation with Galatta India, the actress shared that she never wanted to grow up as a “fat woman”. She also added that using the word “fat” should not be considered harmful, as it merely describes body size.

Parineeti Chopra

Actress Parineeti Chopra has also spoken out in the past about body shaming. In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Parineeti admitted that she didn’t do anything to stay fit and simply enjoyed being the way she was. She described body shaming as “the most ridiculous thing on earth”. “It’s like shaming someone for having black eyes and saying, ‘You have black eyes? What’s wrong with you? How can you have black eyes?’ It’s something natural and something you’re born with. But every human being should strive to be their fittest. They shouldn’t strive to be the skinniest. You can be fit at your own body type,” she said.

Mrunal Thakur

Actress Mrunal Thakur is known for promoting body positivity and ignoring negative comments about her appearance. In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Mrunal spoke about being trolled for her looks on social media and the emotional toll it took on her.

“I’m going to change that beauty standard by flaunting my curves. Earlier, I was afraid of wearing anything body-hugging. But now, I’m like, ‘Body-hugging? Bring it on. And crop tops? Bring it on.’ Why do we need the Kardashians to set beauty standards? Every Indian woman walking on the street – they’re so curvaceous, they’re so beautiful.”

Sameera Reddy

In a recent social media post, Sameera Reddy encouraged her followers to confront the insecurities they hold about their bodies — be it sagging arms, a soft midsection, stretch marks, or any other so-called imperfection.

“Which part of your body have you struggled to accept? We’ve all stared into the mirror and zoomed in on that one part. The flabby arms. The loose belly. The chunky thighs. The imperfect nose. The chest size. The stretch marks… etc. It’s almost second nature to criticise ourselves before we even say good morning. But what if we gave it love and acceptance — even for a moment? Drop it in the comments. No shame, just honesty. #selflove #fitnesscommunity @renewu_official #imperfectlyperfect.”
