‘Kaatrin Mozhi’ to ‘Varma’: Upcoming remakes in Tamil cinema

It’s raining remakes in Kollywood! Several filmmakers are trying to cash in on the popularity of the blockbuster films that worked in the respective languages. According to reports, close to 10 films are currently being remade in Tamil cinema. Right from the Jyothika-starrer ‘Kaatrin Mozhi’ to Samantha Akkineni’s ‘U Turn’, here’s a list of upcoming remakes to look forward to in Tamil.

Kaatrin Mozhi

Jyothika is starring in the Tamil remake of the Bollywood blockbuster ‘Tumhari Sulu’, which had Vidya Balan playing the lead role. The film is about a homemaker, who aspires to become a radio jockey. Being directed by Radhamohan of ‘Mozhi’ fame, ‘Kaatrin Mozhi’ will have Jyothika and Vidharth playing the lead roles and has music by debutant AH Kaashif. Produced by Dhananjayan’s BOFTA Media Works, ‘Kaatrin Mozhi’ is all set for a release on October 18. Apart from Jyothika, the film also stars actress Lakshmi Manchu, who will be reprising the role originally played by Neha Dhupia.

60 Vayadu Maniram

Actors Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj and Samuthirakani are coming together for the first time in ‘60 Vayadu Maaniram’, which is the remake of the Kannada superhit ‘Godhi Banna Sadharna Mykattu’. Being produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu’s V Creations, the film is all set for a release on August 31.Interestingly, the project has music by none other than maestro Ilaiyaraaja and is expected to release later this month. Reportedly, the film revolves around a young man, who is in search of his missing father, who suffers from Alzheimer. ‘Godhi Banna Sadharna Mykattu’ won both critical and commercial success when it released in 2016.

U Turn

Basking in the success of back-to-back blockbusters, Samantha Akkineni is prepping up for the release of ‘U Turn’, a remake of the Kannada blockbuster of the same name. In fact, the original version was unanimously praised for its story and performance by Shraddha Srinath. Pawan Kumar, who directed the original version, is helming both the Tamil and Telugu versions. A mystery-thriller, ‘U Turn’ will see Samantha playing a journalist, who is also a suspect for a series of mysterious murders. Bankrolled by Srinivasa Silver Screen, ‘U Turn’ is locked for a release, which will be hitting the screens on September 13.

Varma

Last year’s runaway hit ‘Arjun Reddy’ is currently being made in Tamil, which will have Vikram’s son Dhruv playing the lead role. Titled ‘Varma’, the Tamil version is being helmed by ace filmmaker Bala. Produced by E 4 Entertainment, ‘Varma’ will have dialogues by the National Award-winning director Raju Murugan. The film is expected to release later this year. So far, the makers have successfully completed two schedules. Bengal based model Megha has been finalised to play the leading lady. ‘Arjun Reddy’ tells the story of a medical surgeon Arjun Reddy (Vijay Deverakonda), who falls for his college junior Preethi (Shalini). Arjun becomes alcoholic post break-up and the rest of the story is about how he redeems himself.

Attarintiki Daredi

The Pawan Kalyan-starrer Telugu blockbuster ‘Attarintiki Daredi’ will be remade in Tamil with Simbu playing the lead role. To be bankrolled by Lyca Productions, the project will be helmed by Sundar C, which will mark his first collaboration with Simbu. Slated to go on the floors later this year, the yet-untitled film will be wrapped by the end of this year and is being planned for a January 2019 release. The makers are planning to rope in Hiphop Tamizha to score for the film. Directed by Trivikram Srinivas, ‘Attarintiki Daredi’ is about Gautham Nanda (Pawan Kalyan) trying to reunite his estranged aunt with his grandfather.

Ayogya

This Jr NTR-starrer Telugu actioner was a monstrous hit when it released in 2015. The film, directed by Puri Jagannadh, is about Daya (Jr NTR), a corrupt police officer who takes the path of justice after a series of events. ‘Temper’ is getting remade in Tamil with ‘Puratchi Thalapathy’ Vishal reprising the role. Titled ‘Ayogya’ in Tamil, debutant Venkat Mohan will be helming the remake, which will have music by Sam CS. The project is being produced by Light House Movie Makers and was officially launched today with a formal pooja ceremony. Tollywood actress Raashi Khanna is being considered for the female lady’s role. Interestingly, ‘Temper’ is also remade in Bollywood as ‘Simba’ with Ranveer Singh playing the lead role.

Paris Paris

Kangana Ranaut truly gave a breathtaking performance in ‘Queen’, which went on to gross over Rs 100 crore crore at the box office. Directed by Vikas Bahl, ‘Queen’ is being remade in all the southern languages. Actor-director Ramesh Aravind is directing the Tamil and Kannada remakes of the film. Titled ‘Paris Paris’ in Tamil, the Tollywood beauty Kajal Aggarwal has been finalised to play Kangana’s role. ‘Queen’ tells the story of a young girl who embarks on her honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam after her fiance calls off the wedding. ‘Paris Paris’, which was wrapped up recently, is gearing up for a release this year.
