​'Valimai' to 'Kaththi': Five times when plagiarism controversy stood up in Kollywood

There have been several Tamil movies getting released every week and majority of them succeed at winning the hearts of fans. But some films land in controversy after it resembles the same as previous films. This has shocked the fans as several leading stars' movies have also faced the issue. But it's just a coincidence or the same idea might have been thought by both as most of them don't want to copy or reuse content from other films. However, here is a look at the five times when plagiarism controversy stood up in Kollywood.

'Kaththi'

After the blockbuster success of 'Thuppakki', Vijay again teamed up with AR Murugadoss for 'Kaththi', and the duo delivered a social drama dedicated to farmers. But the film director Gopi Nainar claimed 'Kaththi' story as copied from his story, and raised allegations that AR Murugadoss cheated him during the initial discussion of the story thread. Gopi Nainar has also filed a case against AR Murugadoss, but the director proved his side and cleared the issue.

'Enthiran'

Shankar and Superstar Rajinikanth teamed up for the mega-budget science-fiction drama 'Enthiran', and the film turned out to be the biggest blockbuster. But writer Arur Tamilnadan claimed the 'Enthiran' story as his story, and the story was published in a magazine in 1996 with another name. The case has been in court for more than ten years, and the issue is yet to be solved.

'96'

Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha starrer '96' is one of the best romantic dramas, and the film directed by Prem Kumar was well enjoyed by the masses. Director Bharathiraja's former associate Suresh claimed the '96' story was plagiarised by Prem Kumar through another director, and he registered the same kind of story with the title '92'.

'Sarkar'

'Sarkar' issue is quite different as the film faced plagiarism issues even before the release. From the teaser and trailer, Varun Rajendran has claimed the 'Sarkar' story as his story, and he proved with copies of his story registered in the association. Later, the issue was solved with the help of K Bhagyaraj, and AR Murugadoss credited Varun Rajendran by putting up his name on the film's title card.

'Valimai'

Ajith's 'Valimai' has started 2022 with a bang, and the action drama has become one of the biggest box office hits. But the film had comparisons with the 2016 Tamil film 'Metro', and memes comparing both films went viral on social media. Now, the 'Metro' producer has filed a petition at the court seeking Rs 1 crore compensation from the 'Valimai' producer.
