Sasikumar's directorial debut 'Subramaniapuram' turns 14

Actor and director Sasikumar made his debut as a director with the movie ‘Subramaniapuram’. Today, July 4, 14 years ago, the film was first released. Starring Jai, Samuthirakani, Swathi in the lead roles, ‘Subramaniapuram’ is a rural action-comedy film. The film, though being a low-budget, was critically acclaimed for its scripting and direction. The story was based in the 1980s in Madurai and the film received utmost praise all over the country.

Taking to Twitter, Sasikumar wrote, "July 4 will always be spl to me #Subramaniyapuram was released on this day 14 years ago. It just feels like yesterday. I'm humbled by the way people revere it, until today, Very soon you will hear the news about my next venture, of course as a filmmaker. #14YearsOfSubramaniyapuram."

Jai was not the first option to play the lead

Director Sasikumar had reportedly approached actor Shanthanu to play the lead role in the film. But as the actor was not available at the time as he wanted to make his debut with the film ‘Sakkarakatti’, the lead role was given to Jai. Reportedly, Jai signed up for the film even without hearing the script of the story as he believed in director Ameer’s choice.

​A raw gangster flick

The film was based on a story in rural Madurai and it was a period film. The movie was noted for its raw gangster flick and the story screenplay was a major success for the film. Director Sasikumar did a lot of background work as he wanted to imitate the style of writing, speaking, and dressing from the 80s.

Kangal Irandal – the anthem of youth

The music for the movie was composed by James Vasanth. The entire album has five songs and the song ‘Kangal Irandal’, a classic melody received so much praise that it topped the music charts and was cited to be ‘the anthem of the youth’ when released. James Vasanth was Sasikumar’s music teacher from school.

Sasikumar’s directorial debut

Sasikumar was an associate of Bala and he worked for ‘Sethu’ as an assistant. He also worked on the film ‘Ram’ and ‘Mounam Pesiyathey’. He made his debut as a director with the film ‘Subramaniapuram’ in 2008 and it was a massive hit. From being a debut director, Sasikumar was identified as a successful director after his first film.

Anurag Kashyap’s favourite film

Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap in an interview had once revealed that ‘Subramaniapuram’ is one of his favourite films and that he was inspired by the film which made him make the Hindi movie ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. Anurag Kashyap has critically acclaimed the film and director Sasikumar many times. The director also held a special screening of ‘Subramaniapuram’ in Mumbai.
