Remembering the late filmmaker K Viswanath's iconic achievements

Known as the Stalwart of Indian cinema, veteran Tollywood director K Viswanath breathed his last on February 2. While undergoing treatment at a private hospital due to age-related ailments, the actor passed away at the age of 92. From the country’s Prime Minister to the veteran, ace actors and directors of Indian cinema, everyone is mourning the death of the legendary personality. Apart from directing, K Viswanath was also well versed in acting, and scripting and even tried his hands on as an audiographer.

Remembering him for his accolades, here are the iconic wins by the filmmaker.

Association with stars

The director has worked with many stars on a close level. He has worked as an actor in ‘Lingaa’ with Rajinikanth, ‘Uthama Villain’ with Kamal Haasan’, ‘Singam’ with Suriya, ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’ with Dhanush. He also directed 10 Bollywood films.

Awards for direction

The director has made more than 50 feature films in Telugu and Hindi. The director has won multiple National Awards and numerous Filmfare Awards. He also won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2017. He is also a recipient of the Padma Shri and K Viswanath has also won the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Film genres

Director K Viswanath’s films addressed the issues of social construct including the issues of caste, colour, disabilities, gender discrimination, misogyny, alcoholism, and socio-economic challenges. The director in his films emphasised the aspects like untouchability and dignity and respectability to manual labours. K Viswanath was one of the directors who believed that films were a way to bring out changes in daily life.

International recognition

The director was well known for his works across borders. He was honoured with the award ‘Prize of the Public’ at the France Film Festival in 1981. K Viswanath was also called out for blending the parallel cinema which rose to a peak in the 1960s in India starting with Bengali films.
