'Pichaikaran' to 'Thadam': Five blockbuster Tamil films which were released in the month of March

This month has not been very good in terms of not just the box office collections of Tamil films but also for the entire world in general owing to the pandemic of Coronavirus. New movie releases have been postponed since theaters have been closed down till March 31 across the country and all shootings have been put on hold. However, in the past, there have been several films that were released in this very month and made great numbers at the ticket windows. Here is a look at five Tamil films from 'Pichaikaran' to 'Thadam' which were released in the month of March and did wonders at the box office.

The story of 'Pichaikaran' was about a billionaire businessman Arul (Vijay Antony), who lives a 48-day secret life as a beggar as part of a religious offering to save his dying mother. The action thriller, which was written and directed by Sasi, featured Vijay Antony and Satna Titus in lead roles. The film was released on March 4, 2016 and proved to be one of the most profitable films in Tamil cinema. It was later dubbed in Telugu and Hindi as 'Bichagadu' and 'Roadside Rowdy' respectively.

'Thozha' revolved around an entrepreneur Vikramaditya, with physical disabilities, who employs Sean as his caregiver. Sean is a convict and on parole. Together, they help each other through their struggles and develop an amazing bond. The bilingual comedy-drama 'Thozha' features Nagarjuna, Karthi and Tamannaah in lead roles. The film was directed by Vamshi Padipally and was produced on a budget of Rs 50 to 60 crore. The film received a great response from the audience, and it went on to reportedly gross over Rs 100 crore.

A man who comes to Chennai for an interview is brutally attacked by a gang of small-time criminals. Later after a series of misunderstandings, a local gangster's son is abducted from school. Sri gets unnecessarily entangled in all this. The 2017 action thriller was written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and the director made a strong entry with his debut. 'Maanagaram' featured Sri, Sundeep Kishan and Regina Cassandra in lead roles, while Charley, Madhusudhan Rao, Ramdoss and Vivek Prasanna played crucial roles.

'Kavan' was about a TV journalist going against his corrupt and dishonest employer's orders and assisting a group of young people in the fight against an insecticide factory. 'Kavan' which was directed by KV Anand received positive reviews and the music of the film was scored by Hiphop Tamizha Adhi. The film starred Vijay Sethupathi and Madonna Sebastian in lead roles with T Rajendar, Vikranth, Pandiarajan, Akashdeep Saighal, Bose Venkat and Jagan in supporting roles.

'Thadam' was an action thriller which was written and directed by Magizh Thirumeni. Arun Vijay played a dual role in the film along with Tanya Hope, Smruthi Venkat and Vidya Pradeep in main roles. The film turned out to be one of the highest-grossing films of the year in Tamil Nadu. 'Thadam’s' Telugu remake 'Red' is gearing up for release, while the Hindi remake with Sidharth Malhotra in the lead role is underway too.
