​'Leo' to 'Jailer': The five most expensive Tamil films on OTT

Tamil filmmakers have started investing in huge numbers in their films to impress the audiences, accordingly there have been several high-budget films over the years. High-budget films get better attention as they include a leading actor or a leading director. At the same time, high-budget dramas have also been earning huge numbers before their release as exhibitors share their interest in those films. As digital platforms have turned out to be fans' favorite these days, the digital rights of high-budget films have been sold on for a massive number. Here is a look at the five most expensive Tamil films on OTT.

'Leo'

After the blockbuster 'Master', Lokesh Kanagaraj and Vijay reunited again for 'Leo', and the action drama was at its peak right after the announcement. The regular promising updates from the film hyped the audience more, and the film peaked well in the pre-release business. 'Leo' digital rights were sold for a huge price of Rs 120 crore, and the Vijay starrer holds the record for the highest OTT deal for a Tamil film that released so far.

'Jailer'

Rajinikanth joined hands with director Nelson Dilipkumar for 'Jailer' and the makers kept the expectations low. Even though the action entertainer had Rajinikanth in the lead role, Nelson Dilipkumar's previous release failing to earn better reviews has lowered the film's pre-release business. 'Jailer' digital rights were secured for Rs 100 crore by a popular platform, which also has some other Rajinikanth's films.

'Ponniyin Selvan'

The excitement for Mani Ratnam's directorial 'Ponniyan Selvan' was high when the director kick-started the film production in 2019. The film's production was delayed due to Corona outbreak. But the delay didn't affect the film as it increased the expectations for the further. 'Ponniyin Selvan' was released in two parts, and the makers sold the digital rights of the historical film as a package. The digital rights of 'Ponniyin Selvan' both parts were sold for a price of Rs 125 crore, and it is streaming in multiple languages.

Varisu

Vijay joined hands with director Vamshi Paidipally for 'Varisu', and the leading actor opting to do a family entertainer after a long time has increased the expectations for the film. The interesting promotional videos hyped the audience as well as exhibitors. The digital rights of 'Varisu' were sold for Rs 80 crore including the dubbed versions.

'Thunivu'

Ajith reunited with director H Vinoth for 'Thunivu' for the third time and the duo delivering a couple of successful films earlier increased the buzz. 'Thunivu' is now streaming on a popular International digital platform, and the OTT rights of the Ajith starrer were bagged for Rs 65 crore. Whereas, the action entertainer earned an amount of Rs 190 crore in the total pre-release business.
