Jana Nayagan censor row: CBFC appeals to Chief Justice after Madras High Court orders U/A certificate for Vijay starrer - Report
The Central Board of Film Certification urgently sought the listing of its appeal before the Madras High Court, challenging the single judge’s order granting a U/A certificate for Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’. This comes minutes after Justice PT Asha pronounced the order allowing the producers' plea at 10:30 am today.
ASG ARL Sundaresan, who appeared for CBFC, made an urgent mention before the bench led by CJ Manindra Mohan Shrivastava for the listing of its appeal against the order, according to Live Law.
When the CJ enquired if the appeal was filed, the ASG mentioned that the order was passed right now. "You file, we'll consider," the CJ reportedly said, asking the ASG to file the appeal and mention the matter again.
On Friday, January 9, the Madras High Court directed the CBFC to grant a U/A certificate to the Vijay starrer 'Jana Nayagan'. The film was held after a complaint was made to the censor board, alleging its content hurt religious sentiments.
"After examining materials, it is crystal clear that the complainant's grievance appears to be an afterthought," Justice PT Asha, while pronouncing the order, said. The court also noted that entertaining such complaints could lead to a 'dangerous trend.'
