Highlights from ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ trailer and audio launch

The magnum opus pan India film ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ had its trailer and audio launch on September 6 in Chennai. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the historical fiction drama is adapted from the novel with the same title written by Kalki. The film is set to release in theatres on September 30 and is one of the most anticipated films of the year. The movie has a star-studded cast with Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha playing the lead roles along with Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Parthiban, Nasser, Prakash Raj, Rahman, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita and Vikram Prabhu playing in supporting roles.

There was a surprise for the fans when the trailer launch had directors Shankar, Gautham Vasudev Menon and music composers Yuvan Shankar Raja and Santhosh Narayanan. Yuvan Shankar Raja and Santhosh Narayanan also gave a small performance at the trailer and audio launch.

It is year 2022, and ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is marking the 30 years of collaboration of AR Rahman and Mani Ratnam. In 1992, AR Rahman made his debut with his film ‘Aasai’ which was directed by Mani Ratnam. Following that Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman worked for ‘Bombay’, ‘Dil Se’, ‘Thiruda Thiruda’, ‘Guru’, ‘Kadal’, ‘Ok Kanmani’, ‘Alaipazyuthey’, ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’, 'Raavanan', ‘Kaatru Veliyidai’ and much more.

Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan were invited for the trailer and audio launch as special guests. As the duo launched the trailer on stage with Mani Ratnam, it brought back the times when Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan worked with Mani Ratnam for ‘Thalapathi’ and ‘Nayagan’. The two iconic stars also revealed that it was in their plans to do ‘Ponniyin Selvan’. Kamal Haasan said that he always had this small ego with Mani Ratnam whether who will make the film first and that he was happy with the cast and crew that is making the film.

The audio launch was held in grand manner along with the trailer launch. Apart from the two singles that were released earlier, the film had three more songs from its juke box and AR Rahman performed live on stage for the Chennai audience. With the pandemic lockdown, AR Rahman has not conducted a live concert and this audio launch had the music composer perform on stage for his fans. He sang the song ‘Ponni Nadhi’ from the film.

The trailer launch had many film fraternities attending the event. It included the entire cast of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ along with Mani Ratnam’s heroes and heroines – Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Siddharth and Aditi Rao Hydari. The trailer launch also made it a small reunion for the actors and actresses who worked earlier for their films together. Trisha and Siddharth worked together for ‘Azhutha Ezhuthu’, Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari worked together for ‘Kaatru Veliyidau’, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan worked together for ‘Raavanan’ and Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Raai also had worked together for ‘Enthiran’.
