From Vettai Mannan to Kettavan: Silambarasan TR’s 4 most ambitious yet dropped films

Silambarasan TR, fondly known as STR, is a powerhouse of talent in Tamil cinema. An actor, director, singer, and lyricist, he’s known not only for his on-screen charisma but also for his off-screen boldness in pushing cinematic boundaries. Over the years, STR has announced several high-concept projects that, despite creating massive hype, were unfortunately shelved. Here’s a look at four of his most ambitious yet dropped films.

2/5

Vettai Mannan

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar (before his breakout hits Doctor and Jailer), Vettai Mannan was a stylish action-comedy featuring STR as a quirky assassin. The film had an ensemble cast including Jai, Hansika Motwani, and Deeksha Seth, and boasted international settings and a genre-bending narrative. A teaser was released to positive buzz, but the project was halted due to financial and production issues. Fans still regard it as one of the biggest missed opportunities in STR’s career.

3/5

Kettavan

STR shocked fans when he announced Kettavan, where he would portray an unapologetically negative character. The film’s controversial title alone sparked conversation, and STR even released the song “Eppo Nee” as part of the film’s early promotion. The actor had planned to direct it himself, but after a few initial schedules, the film was shelved. Despite being dropped early, Kettavan continues to enjoy cult status among STR fans for its bold premise.

4/5

Valiban

Valiban was a passion project that STR both wrote and planned to direct. Touted as a romantic-action drama with a stylish international flavor, the film was partially shot across the US and Europe. A motion poster and promo stills were shared with fans, promising a visually rich cinematic experience. However, the film was eventually shelved due to creative and logistical challenges, adding another high-profile title to STR’s list of unfinished ventures.

5/5

Arasan

One of the lesser-known but equally ambitious projects, Arasan was rumored to be a period-action film with STR in a royal avatar. Concept art and speculative posters made rounds online, hinting at a grand scale narrative. Though the film never went into full-fledged production, it reflected STR’s desire to experiment with genres and storytelling formats beyond the conventional. The project quietly faded away, leaving fans curious about what could’ve been.
