Five times when a box office dispute stirred up among fans in Kollywood

Despite review ratings, the box office collection of a film decides its winning status. All films are made to earn the amount, but only a few films earn double their budget due to their commercial element and the star value. Surprisingly, more than makers, fans worry about the box office numbers of their favorite stars as they need to cheer for their star on social media. This stirred up battles several times, and the recent release 'Beast' starring Vijay has also been facing the issue. Here is a look at five reasons why there is a box office fight in Kollywood.

'Master

Vijay's 'Master' was the first biggest release post-pandemic, and the makers waited for more than 8 months to release the film in theaters. The 2021 Pongal release was released with 50% occupancy, and the film reportedly grossed over Rs 25 crores in TN and 34 crores in WW. The magical numbers with 50% occupancy turned up the debate, while a few quoted fewer numbers for the film.

'Annaatthe'

Rajinikanth's 'Annaatthe' was released for the occasion of 2021 Diwali, and the film didn't have a major clash at the box office. The much-awaited film had reportedly grossed close to Rs 34 crores to become the highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu on an opening day. But a few claimed it didn't break the record in Tamil Nadu and stated Vijay's 'Sarkar' as the day 1 record holder. These two different numbers caused a social media battle.

'Valimai

Ajith's 'Valimai' is one of the films that was heavily affected because of the Corona spread, and the film's production time got extended due to the pandemic. However, the makers released the cop drama last February, and the film got an extraordinary opening. 'Valimai' has reportedly grossed over Rs 34 crores in Tamil Nadu on an opening day, and was tagged as the highest grosser on day 1 in TN. But again the film was claimed to gross less than Vijay's 2018 Diwali release 'Sarkar'.

'Etharkkum Thunindhavan'

Suriya had a first theatrical release in three years with 'Etharkkum Thunindhavan', which was directed by Pandiraj. The emotional action drama had grossed close to Rs 10 crores at the box office on day 1. But fans quoted higher numbers for the film, and the difference in numbers stirred up a social media fight between Suriya fans and other fans.

'Beast'

Vijay's action drama 'Beast' was released on a working day on April 13th, and the film got a thunderous opening with almost all shows for day 1 sold out. 'Beast' has reportedly grossed Rs 38 crores at the box office on day 1 in Tamil Nadu, and over Rs 60 crores WW. But Rajinikanth and Ajith fans claimed the film scored less than 'Annaatthe' and 'Valimai', and refused to accept its numbers. This led to a social media clash between fans.
