Five popular Tamil films that revolved around goddess Amman

A slew of Tamil mythological fantasy films have been made in Kollywood that revolves around goddess Amman. On the special occasion of Vijayadasami, here’s a look at five films based on the goddess Amman that became popular among the audiences.

2/6

Amman

Amman revolves an orphan named Bhavani (played by the late Soundarya), who is an ardent devotee of the goddess. Though the film was shot in Telugu and later released in Tamil, it was such a huge success that it almost set the trend of mythological fantasy films with visual effects. Ramya Krishnan played the character of goddess Amman to such perfection that she became one of the sought-after actresses to play the goddess thereafter.

3/6

Rajakali Amman

This devotional film had Kausalya and Vadivelu playing siblings and Ramya Krishnan playing the goddess Rajakali Amman. The film again marked the victory of good over evil. Rajakali Amman, directed by Rama Narayanan, has oodles of melodrama, visual effects, brother-sister sentiment and devotion! A snake (albeit in graphics), who is a friend of the sibling duo plays an important role! What’s interesting is that the film came from the production house of legendary director K Balachander!

4/6

Palayathu Amman

Palayathu Amman is yet another devotional fare from the stable of director Rama Narayanan. This time around, it was Meena who portrayed the goddess. Divya Unni, Ramki, Charan Raj, Vivekh and Senthil play the primary cast. The plot revolves around a child who is constantly tried to harm by the Satan, but is saved by none other than Palayathu Amman herself!

5/6

Kottai Mariamman

Kottai Mariamman, written and directed by Rama Narayanan, features Roja in the titular role. When Mantramoorthi (Rami Reddy) tries to take away the golden eye petals of the goddess, he is defeated in the process. The film revolves around Durga, who is taken care of and raised by Kottai Mariamman. The star cast includes Devayani, Karan, Vivekh, Yuvarani, Senthil, Nizhalgal Ravi and Venniradai Moorthy to name a few. Kottai Mariamman is directed by Rama Narayanan.

6/6

Padai Veetu Amman

Meena plays the dual role of goddess Padai Veetu Amman and Muthu Mariamman in this fare. Devayani (Chamundi) plays a devotee of the goddess and the film opens with her being brutally killed on the eve of her wedding. When the presiding deity Muthu Mariamman is bound by a vow she made to Chamundi, the neighbouring deity Padai Veetu Amman comes to the rescue of the village. The film is directed by Pughazhmani.
