Before 'Jana Nayagan': Where to watch Thalapathy Vijay’s social dramas that redefined message-driven cinema

Thalapathy Vijay's cinema journey is replete with socially relevant films, which have provided a unique combination of mass entertainment and social justice, anti-corruption, and proper governance, as well as encouraged and reminded us of our social responsibilities. Whether on the courtroom floor or among the farmer colonies, in the sphere of healthcare ethics or political awakening, nodding his head with the common man, you will find him portrayed in this way. With the stalemate over 'Jana Nayagan' because of the court case and the Censor Board problem, here’s a categorization of Vijay’s social movies in Tamil cinema, which is a genre in itself.

2/6

'Thamizhan' (2002)

'Thamizhan' has Vijay and Priyanka Chopra in a film where a country, when he changes into an unrealistic lawyer, becomes an advocate against the system along with thugs. Surya will begin his job against Tiger and make matters miserable for the people around. He teaches them about the law, and soon he is the people's favorite hero. The movie is helmed by director Majith, with music done by D. Imman. The main cast consists of Nassar, Revathi, Vivek, and Ashish Vidyarthi as the prominent characters.

‘Thamizhan’ is available for viewing through the streaming and download services offered in HD quality by Sun NXT and Airtel Xstream.

3/6

'Kaththi' (2014)

‘Kaththi’ is an entertaining social thriller film, helmed by A.R. Murugadoss, starring Vijay in a dual role as a common man and a savage dacoit’s doppelganger, who fights against the corporate ‘evil’ and saves farmers from their bullying, land and water grabbing, and cattle raiding. The movie focuses on the topic of farmers and their troubles caused by huge corporations. Samantha and Neil Nitin Mukesh play the leading actors, along with a good supporting cast.

‘Kaththi’ is available on platforms such as Prime Video and Netflix but can still be watched online.

4/6

'Mersal' (2017)

'Mersal' is directed by Atlee and features Vijay in a triple role as a village leader and his lookalike twin sons, enfolding the concept of unearthing family secrets, taking revenge, and fighting the medical mafia. Exciting pictures are interwoven with a social plot of health fraud and justice. S.J. Suryah and Kajal Aggarwal are among these names alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nithya Menen, with A.R. Rahman roped in for the score.

'Mersal' can be watched on Netflix, and then you may view it on Zee5 and OTTplay Premium.

5/6

'Sarkar' (2018)

In 'Sarkar,' Vijay plays an NRI businessman who comes to India after a long period and discovers that he is not eligible to vote in the illegal elections. He initiates a mass movement with the motto of fighting electoral fraud and corruption; he pays attention to the political issues in the form of entertainment. A.R. Murugadoss has not only directed Keerthy Suresh but also Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. AR Rahman's music is the most amazing part of this movie.

You can watch 'Sarkar' on the Sun NXT and Netflix platforms.

6/6

'Master' (2021)

In the film ‘Master,’ directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Vijay portrays the role of JD, an unconventional teacher sent to a juvenile school to reform the misbehavior of a wayward ruffian played by Vijay Sethupathi. Action drama is a split-face flick encompassing mentoring, drugs, and redemption. Along with Malavika Mohanan, Arjun Das, and Andrea Jeremiah, ‘Master’ is one of the most satisfying movies of Vijay. The film turned out to be one of the biggest hits of Vijay.

Amazon Prime Video has the streaming rights for the movie, and it should be available in India as well as other foreign countries.
