Ajith Kumar, Suriya Sivakumar: Tamil stars who transformed drastically for their roles

Tamil cinema is known for its powerful stories and talented actors. Some Tamil stars go beyond just acting; they completely change their body, look, or style to match their roles. These transformations take a lot of hard work, strict diets, and intense training. Here are some Tamil actors who made drastic transformations to bring their roles to life.

2/7

Suriya Sivakumar

Suriya is well-known for transforming his body for films like ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ and ‘Kanguva.’ For the film he lost about 10 kg in just about 22 days, then rebuilt a muscular physique for the role of an army officer. More recently, at age 49, he achieved six‑pack abs in just 100 days without steroids for ‘Kanguva,’ following a strict diet and exercise plan tailored to his age. His transformation showed his dedication and inspired many fitness enthusiasts.

3/7

Ajith Kumar

Ajith, sometimes called “Thala,” underwent major shape-shifts, especially for ‘Vivegam.’ He chiselled out a ripped, six‑pack body that became a viral sensation upon the film's early posters. For another film, he reportedly lost more than 15 kg, despite earlier surgeries causing weight gain. His transformation contrasts his off-screen injuries with on-screen resilience.

4/7

Vikram

Vikram is legendary for transforming multiple times in the movie ‘I.’. Over a three-year shoot, he played four distinct looks: a muscular bodybuilder, a handsome model, a hunchback as thin as 56 kg, and a beast with prosthetics. He gained muscle with a protein-heavy diet, then severely slimmed down eating egg whites and apples. He even shaved his head and stayed out of public life to preserve character anonymity.

5/7

Silambarasan TR (Simbu / STR)

Simbu has undergone notable transformations in his later films. He lost nearly 10 kg in just 10 days for a role in Vetri Maaran’s upcoming film to portray a younger version of his character. Earlier, ahead of films like ‘Eeswaran,’ he released a personal video showing months of weight loss and skills training like Kalaripayattu and Bharatanatyam. A few years ago, he drastically reduced his weight from over 108 kg down to under 70 kg with a disciplined diet and workouts.

6/7

Arvind Swamy

Arvind Swamy lost significant weight for his comeback film ‘Kadal.’ He shed around 15 kg post-treatment before returning to cinema under director Mani Ratnam. The leaner, refreshed look allowed him to convincingly play intense dramatic roles. Though his transformation was subtler than others, it marked an important personal and professional milestone.

7/7

Arya

Arya transformed for critical roles such as in ‘Naan Kadavul’ and ‘Irandam Ulagam.’ For ‘Naan Kadavul,’ he grew long hair, a bushy beard, and a mustache to play a real-life aghori, so convincingly that some people thought he was a real holy man. For ‘Irandam Ulagam,’ he built a muscular frame and a six-pack to look fit and powerful.
