'Aalavandhan' to 'Leo': Five Tamil films that were shot in extremely cold weather

Tamil cinema has been delivering several genres of films every year, while many turn on to become huge hits. Some have been shot in a quick time, while a few take extended time due to the location and other challenges. As filmmakers move on to film across locations around the globe to shoot for their films, they face multiple challenges like weather conditions and language barriers. Let's take a look at five Tamil films that were shot in extremely cold weather.

'Aalavandhan'

Kamal Haasan starrer 'Aalavandhan' was released in 2001 and the film also had the story written by the lead actor. Kamal Haasan played a dual role, and the film is set in a Kashmir backdrop. Several sequences of the film have been shot in intense portions of Kashmir, and the team faced challenging situations shooting with multiple artists in cold weather. However, the hard work paid off as the Kashmir sequences came out well.

'Kaatru Veliyidai'

Mani Ratnam's directorial 'Kaatru Veliyidai' features Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari in lead roles, and the romantic drama is set in the Northern states of India. Several portions of the have been filmed in Kashmir as the lead actor played an air force officer. Ravi Varman handled the cinematography for the 2017 Tamil film and the talented DOP filmed some jet portions despite cold weather and misty conditions.

'Vivegam'

Ajith joined hands with director Siruthai Siva for the third time for 'Vivegam' and the duo made the film on a Hollywood standard. A short portion of the film was shot in Bulgaria, and the degrees were minus as the team filmed in heavy snow. Ajith went with a translucent T-shirt for those scenes in Bulgaria, and the actor worked hard for them.

'Cobra'

Chiyaan Vikram joined hands with director Ajay Gnanamuthu and an important portion of the film was shot in Russia. It was -18 degrees Celsius when Chiyaan Vikram filmed those portions, but the team successfully completed filming in live locations despite the pandemic threat. 'Cobra' was released in theatres last August, and the film failed to convert big at the box office.

'Leo'

After the success of 'Master', Vijay reunited with director Lokesh Kanagaraj for the second time for 'Leo' and the film shooting kick-started earlier in 2023. The team has successfully wrapped up the Kashmir schedule of the film, and they have shot under -10 degree celsius during the schedule. Over 500 members have worked during the Kashmir schedule, and the makers have shared the making video to thank the crew for their support.
