After directing Vijay in one of his biggest blockbusters, Kushi, in 2000, SJ Suryah made a cameo appearance in Thalapathy's Nanban, and later played the antagonist in Atlee's Mersal. Now, he is reportedly going to team up with Thalapathy once again in Varisu.

In this Venkat Prabhu thriller, SJ Suryah played a corrupt cop who is trying to assassinate the state's chief minister for his personal gains. But as fate would have it, he gets stuck in a time loop, just like the protagonist, played by Simbu, and his exasperation at not being able to foil the hero's attempts to stop the assassination are both comical and thrilling.

In his most recent role, in Don, SJ Suryah played a disciplinarian professor who is at loggerheads with his wayward student. The moves and counter-moves that the two come up with to bring down the other results in quite a few fun moments in the film. The actor managed to entertain the audiences with his comic act in this film.

Playing the antagonist in Mahesh Babu's debut film in Tamil, SJ Suryah stole the show as a sociopathic mass murderer who engages in a battle of wits the the protagonist. Their tense confrontation scene, with the vibe of Batman and Joker's face-off, was one of the highlights of the film.

SJ Suryah and Vijay Sethupathi shared screen space in Karthik Subbaraj's drama Iraivi, which marked the resurgence of SJ Suryah as an actor. In the film, he played a struggling director and the elder brother of Bobby Simha, who is friendly towards Vijay Sethupathi. The climax scene between a repentant Vijay Sethupathi and an angry SJ Suryah was both shocking and moving.
