27 years of 'Indian': From acting against corruption to a new sequel

Kamal Haasan's 'Indian' was released in theatres in 1996. The film has now completed 27 years, but still stands as best Tamil cult classic film and an example of good movie. Directed by Shankar, the film's music was composed by AR Rahman and the story of the movie focusses on a freedom fighter standing against corruption by the government officials. With the film still not dying down today, the sequel of the movie underway. Here are 5 things to note about 'Indian' which is making it stand strong as a film in Kollywood.

The plot

Starring Kamal Haasan, Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar in lead roles, the film focussed on fight against corruption in the government. Kamal Haasan played a dual role in the film as the father and son, and both the characters became a hit. The irony of the film portraying father fighting off the corruption and son being part of it was as a concept was critically acclaimed.

Box Office

The film after its release in theatres ran very successfully and it attained the fame as a cult classic movie. The film tasted commercial success as it made more than Rs 50 crore at the box office two decades back. Following its hit in Tamil, the movie was later dubbed into Hindi and Telugu.

Film Awards

The movie had won multiple state, national and international awards. It was also selected as one of the Indian films under the category of Best Foreign Film for the Academy Awards in 1996. But unfortunately it was not nominated. The film has won the State Film Award for Best Actor and Best Film and won the National Award for Best Actor, Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects.

A sequel

The film is now getting a sequel. Directed by Shankar, the movie stars Kamal Haasan,Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth, Bobby Simha, Rakul Preet Singh and Priya Bhavani Shankar in lead roles. The music for the movie is composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The film is currently undershooting and it is on full swing. It is expected to release in theatres this year.
