‘Prada’ fame singer Shreya Sharma: I recall someone calling me the voice of Alia Bhatt - Exclusive

They say sometimes all it takes is one song, one miracle and you find your place in the hearts of the audience. Something similar happened with singer Shreya Sharma who rose to fame with her track ‘Prada’. The texture of her voice got immense love from one and all. Recently, also when her song ‘Dupatta’ came in the Bollywood movie ‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’, she once again took the industry and the audience by storm.

Elated Shreya sat with ETimes for a cup of candid conversation, wherein she talked about her journey, the song ‘Duppatta’, her love for Punjabi music, and much more!

From jingles to ‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’ - The journey so far

“Having studied both classical and opera music, I started my journey with jingles, YouTube, and live shows. At a show in Delhi, I met Doorbeen. We went on to create the song ‘Prada’. After they gained popularity from the song ‘Lamborghini’, we released ‘Prada’. I had no idea that Alia Bhatt would be part of the song. I recall someone calling me the voice of Alia Bhatt. It was so surprising and I am grateful to Doorbeen for making it happen.”

“After that, I recorded my own songs ‘Ladka Baimaan’, ‘Tera Nasha,’ and ‘Duppata’, which we recorded with no expectations. Shortly after, we received a call from the Dharma team that they wanted the song and I am grateful to Raj Mehta, Karan Johar, and Azeem Dayani for giving us this opportunity.”

Her reaction to bagging the song ‘Duppata’

“When I first received the news that ‘Duppata’ was going to be in a Dharma production I couldn’t believe it. In fact, it took the teaser coming out for it to sink in for me. I’m extremely grateful to the Dharma team, Azeem Dayani, and Raj Mehta for believing in Duppata and giving it so much love."

Spilling beans on her favourite artists - Jonita Gandhi, Asees Kaur, Shilpa Rao!

“I love Asees Kaur because I feel she is extremely versatile. Her voice goes with any song, any mood, any situation. She is a great singer and I love her overtones and how she brings this kind of personality to every song.”

“Shilpa Rao is another one of my favorites. She is a legend in the industry and has a beautiful voice. I have been following her journey from the beginning and it's safe to say that her music never disappoints.”

“Jonita Gandhi also tops the list of my favorite singers. She is versatile and has a wide range, where she can sing a party number as well as something classical. I admire her music and her voice and look up to her”.

Her viewpoint on people grooving more on Punjabi music

"People are most definitely grooving to Punjabi music more. Punjabi music is so lively and full of heart. It's not just the upbeat music but also the lyrics that make the song as beautiful as is. Punjabi music is also so versatile as it can be made in the form of pop, rap, etc. even if you don’t understand the lyrics, the music, and emotions in the song are enough to make you enjoy it.”

Why did she fall for Punjabi music?

"The reason I love Punjabi music is that no matter the mood, the song always has a character that peeks through. Also, the vibrancy of the lyrics and the beat in Punjabi music is super uplifting and a perfect recipe to make my mood better.”
