‘Sulaikha Manzil’ to ‘Thattathin Marayathu’: Movies with simple plots that captivated audiences

A director’s ability is on full display when he/she takes up a film that has a simple plot that can be even written in one line, unlike movies with a strong script such as ‘Manichithrathazhu’ or ‘Drishyam’. There are plenty of examples in Mollywood where the film was loved by a vast majority even though it had a simple script. Here let’s take a look at a few of them.

‘Thattathin Marayathu’

The beauty of every romantic film lies in its simplicity and its ability to connect with the audience. Nivin Pauly’s ‘Thattathin Marayathu’ passes all of the above criteria and is the main reason why the movie has a huge fan base and is one of the superhit films in Mollywood. The movie handles the plot of a Hindu boy falling in love with a Muslim girl named Aisha and the rest is Vineeth Sreenivasan’s magic in narrating the story beautifully on screen.

‘Sulaikha Manzil’

Lukman Avaran - Anarkali Marikar’s romantic drama ‘Sulaikha Manzil’ is the recent example of a movie in Mollywood which is liked by the majority for its simple and relatable plot. Nothing dramatic happens in the movie that revolves around a day before the marriage of Haala and Ameen. The film’s success is purely because of the way how it connects with a person born into a Muslim family.

‘Maheshinte Prathikaaram’

Dileesh Pothan’s mastery of handling a simple plot and executing it both realistically and appealing to a mass audience is clearly visible in the Fahadh Faasil starrer ‘Maheshinte Prathikaaram’. The movie revolves around a photographer who sets out to take revenge on a stranger who beat him in front of the whole villagers. The director and the writer Shyam Pushkaran filled in this simple plot with several interesting characters and happenings along with a brilliant Fahadh Faasil in the lead.

‘Katha Parayumbol’

When a simple plot is mixed with brilliant acting, perfect comedy, and emotion, there happens the family drama film ‘Katha Parayumbol’ starring Sreenivasan and Mammootty in the lead. The first half of the movie literally has no storyline even though the director M Mohan engages the audiences with a lot of interesting happenings surrounding the life of barber Balan and the film star Ashok Raj. The climax showcases a strong friendship between Balan and Ashok Raj and is indeed one of the best emotional endings in Mollywood.

‘Thanneer Mathan Dinangal’

Even though ‘Thaneer Mathan Dinangal’ is not a classic film, the Girish AD’s directorial surely deserves much adulation for handling a small plot and making it interesting. The movie is all about a teenager named Jaison having a crush on his classmate Keerthy. The realistic performances and engaging screenplay is what makes ‘Thanneer Mathan Dinangal’ a special one.
