‘Bhargavi Nilayam’

Although the 1964 horror film ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’ is not completely based on a real event, it has some instances that are taken from the life experiences of the veteran writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. The story is based on Basheer’s ‘Neelavelicham’ and the writer reportedly said that he has included a real-life experience in the movie where he witnessed the sudden disappearance of a girl who was taking a bath on a beach.

‘Romancham’

The recently released horror comedy movie ‘Romancham’ is based on a real story where a group of seven bachelors living in Bangalore decides to summon a ghost with the use of a Ouija board. ‘Manichitrathazhu’

Yes, you heard it right! The classic film ‘Manichitrathazhu’ is based on a true story about a tragedy that happened in the Alumoottil Tharavad in the year 1870. A servant girl in the house was tortured and brutally murdered by the head of the family known by then as ‘Karanavar’ and this inspired the writer Madhu Muttom to write the magnificent plot for ‘Manichitrathazhu’

‘Kadamattathachan’

Even though it’s only a belief that the priest named ‘Kadamattathachan’ actually existed and possessed magical powers, the Prem Nazir starrer 1984 movie ‘Kadamattathachan’ can be said to be based on some true events. The story revolves around a priest who heads to a forest, possesses magical powers, and stays with a wild tribe. The film was directed by George Thariyan.
