‘Jailer’ to ‘Villain’: Exploring Malayalam and Tamil films sharing the same title

In the vast and diverse world of cinema, it is not uncommon to come across films from different regions sharing the same title. This fascinating phenomenon can be observed in several Indian films, where two distinct film industries often produce movies with identical names. Here, let’s take a look at the Malayalam and Tamil movies that share the same title.

‘Villain’

Tamil superstar Ajith’s heist action movie ‘Villain’ shares the same title as Mohanlal’s thriller movie ‘Villain’. Although both films have the same title, Ajith’s ‘Villain’ came out years back in 2002 before Mohanlal’s movie which hit the big screens in 2017. Mohanlal’s ‘Villain’ was helmed by B Unnikrishnan while the Ajith starrer was directed by the veteran filmmaker KS Ravikumar.

‘Friends’

One would never be able to forget the classic Malayalam movie ‘Friends’ starring Mukesh, Jayaram, and Sreenivasan in the lead which hit the big screens in the year 1999. As the movie turned out to be a super hit, the Mollywood director Siddique remade the movie by the same title with the star cast of Vijay, Suriya, and Vadivelu. Both the original version and the remake earned big bucks at the box office.

‘Jailer’

Dhyan Sreenivasan’s ‘Jailer’ and ‘Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’ can be considered the most recent example of two different movies having the same title. Another surprising factor is that both the movies will be hitting the big screens on the same day which is scheduled on August 10 this year. Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’ deals with a jail warden trying all his measures to prevent a group of thugs from entering the prison to take out their boss. On the other hand, Dhyan Sreenivasan’s ‘Jailer’ deals with the main character who is trying to recapture a group of prisoners who escaped the prison.

‘Nayakan’

Lijo Jose Pellissery's action drama and Kamal Haasan’s classic gangster film ‘Nayakan’ share the same title. The Malayalam ‘Nayakan’ had the actor Indrajith Sukumaran in the lead. As both the Tamil and Malayalam ‘Nayakan’ has the same genre, it can be assumed that Lijo Jose Pellissery was actually trying to pay tribute to Kamal Haasan’s classic crime drama movie.
