Happy Birthday, Priyadarshan: Reasons why he is a master at handling every film genres

Director Priyadarshan once said in an interview with an online media channel that he wants to be known as a filmmaker who has tried different genres in cinema ranging from comedy to serious drama. Looking by the legendary director’s filmography, it's a known fact that he is a raconteur who has aced at handling different movie genres. Comedy films

Directing a comedy film is a cakewalk for Priyadarshan and his films ‘Odaruthammava Aalariyam’, ‘Boeing Boeing’, ‘Aram + Aram = Kinnaram’, ‘Kilukkam’, ‘Akkare Akkare Akkare’ are all examples on how good he is at executing comedy films. While directing comedy films, Priyadarshan uses a kind of screenplay formulae that perfectly weaves together emotions with comedy. His one-liner dialogues coupled with terrific performances of the majority of the cast is surely the reason why Priyadarshan’s comedy films stand unique and memorable.

Drama films

Priyadarshan films ‘Kakkakuyil’, ‘Minnaram’, ‘Kilichundan Mampazham’, are all perfect examples of proving that he is a master at executing an engaging drama with flavors of comedy elements in it. What makes Priyadarshan’s drama films more interesting is because of the equal screen space that he gives for each character to perform. Priyadarshan always makes sure to write a character-driven story without losing the emotional quotient in it.

Action genre

It's not an easy task, especially for a filmmaker from the Malayalam film industry, to execute a flawless action film considering the budget constraints. But Priyadarshan tackles this issue with the application of emotion and by creating a perfect structure to the characters. The Mohanlal starrer crime-drama film ‘Abhimanyu’ really engages you not because of the terrific action sequences, but because of the flawless execution style of Priyadarshan that makes the audience emotionally invested in the characters.

Historical drama

The classic film ‘Kalapani’ was born when the director Priyadarshan took a deviation from doing comedy films and decided to do a Historical drama film with Mohanlal. ‘Kalapani’ is undoubtedly one of the best works of director Priyadarshan. Hats off to Priyadarshan’s conceptualisation and extremely brutal presentation of historical events coupled with the terrific acting of Mohanlal as the character Govardhan Menon.
