Dr. Biju says ‘Chhello Show’ is a ‘better selection’ as the Gujarati film becomes India’s official entry for the 2023 Oscars; comments on ‘RRR’
National award-winning filmmaker Dr. Biju, in his latest social media post, has voiced his opinion on the Gujarati film ‘Chhello Show’ aka ‘Last Film Show’ being selected as India's official entry for the 95th Academy Awards, and also the ongoing row on the pan-Indian blockbuster ‘RRR’ not making it.
In his note, the acclaimed Malayali filmmaker stated that ‘Chhello Show’ is a ‘better selection, and added that the box office success of a film is not a criterion for making it to the best international feature film category at the Oscars.
“India’s Oscar submission for this year announced. Pan Nalin’s ‘Chello Show” selected. I think this is a better selection this year. Many people wrote and criticizing that why films like RRR has not selected. Their point is that RRR had a big box office hit in India and US and known to many people. They also pointing that there was a report in Variety magazine that RRR had a better chance. I am surprising that they didn’t know the basic reality of Oscar especially in Best international feature film category selection (sic),” he said in the note.
“In fact, a Box Office hit is not at all a consideration for Oscar best international feature film category. For other category of Oscar it may be a factor and any film which released in US can directly submit their films. But for international feature film category If Box office hit gets an advantage then big commercially success films from various countries would have selected many Box office hits as their entry. IT’S TOTALLY WRONG. For best international feature film category in Oscar all the films submitted by countries are selected on the basis of their artistic value, international festival credibility and critical acclaim (sic),” he added.
Dr. Biju shared a list of films being nominated for the specific category at the Oscars in the past three years. The ‘Perariyathavar’ director also stated that ‘Chhello Show’ has an upper hand in several aspects, including the film being distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films in the US market.

On the other hand, as per the reports, the US distributor of ‘RRR’ has requested the Academy to consider the film 'in all categories'.
