How Salim Kumar turned Manavalan into a Malayalam cinema legend, reveals Sibi K Thomas: 'He always added more than we wrote'

Malayalam cinema has produced many memorable comic characters, but only a few have managed to stay alive in public memory long after the films left theatres. One such character is Manavalan from 'Pulival Kalyanam'. With his quirky mannerisms, distinctive appearance, and relentless hunt for his missing father, the role became far bigger than the film itself.Even after more than twenty years, clips featuring Manavalan continue to circulate online, drawing laughter from audiences both old and new. While 'Pulival Kalyanam' was a commercial success, it is Salim Kumar's performance that remains one of the film's strongest legacies.Screenwriter Sibi K Thomas, one half of the celebrated Udaykrishna-Sibi K Thomas duo, shared how deeply intertwined Salim Kumar was with their creative process. Over the years, the duo collaborated with the actor in 23 films, including popular entertainers like 'CID Moosa', 'Pulival Kalyanam', and 'Chess'.Reflecting on their association, Sibi shared with Onmanorama, "Whenever we developed a script, there would almost always be a character for Salim. All we had to do was give him a character. Salim would take it somewhere we hadn't even imagined. There was an unspoken understanding between us. Whenever we made a film, we knew he would be part of it." According to him, Salim Kumar possessed a rare ability to transform a written character into something much richer on screen.Though 'Pulival Kalyanam' revolved around Jayasurya's character, Manavalan ended up stealing much of the spotlight. His scenes with Cochin Haneefa are still considered comic gold among Malayalam film lovers.Recalling some of the film's iconic moments, Sibi remarked, "The Salim Kumar-Cochin Haneefa combination is what everyone remembers. Whether it was Manavalan arriving from Bombay in a taxi or the scene where he puts a thumb impression on a document and says it is for his own assurance, those moments have become classics."He further added, "When we write comedy scenes, we leave space for actors to perform and improvise. Salim would take those moments and elevate them. He always gave us more than what we had imagined."Filmmaker Jayaraj, who directed Salim Kumar in films such as 'Thilakkam' and 'Loudspeaker', believes the actor's appeal stemmed from much more than comic timing. "He looked at life through laughter," Jayaraj recalled. "Even when he responded to social issues, there was humour in the way he expressed himself. He had a style that was entirely his own."The director remembered that optimism staying with Salim Kumar even during challenging times. "When I visited him while he was unwell, there was never sadness or worry. It was always laughter and jokes. Even now, after his passing, what comes to mind is his smiling face."For Jayaraj, Salim Kumar's lasting impact cannot be reduced to punchlines alone. "It wasn't just about whether he performed a role well. It was about the way he delivered those characters. Even today, scenes from 'Thilakkam' appear on social media almost every day. People continue to revisit them because there was something unique about his performance."While comedy made him a household name, his dramatic abilities were equally remarkable. Jayaraj pointed to Salim Kumar's National Award-winning turn in 'Adaminte Makan Abu' as evidence of his extraordinary versatility.Jayaraj revealed that the two had often discussed reuniting for another project, one that would showcase yet another dimension of the actor's talent. Sadly, those plans never came to fruition. Yet the impact of Salim Kumar remains impossible to ignore. Characters like Manavalan, Dance Master Vikram, Kannan Sranku, and many others continue to thrive through memes, social media videos, and everyday conversations. His performances have become woven into Kerala's popular culture, ensuring that each new generation discovers his work.The actor's greatest achievement was not simply making audiences laugh in the moment.
