Why Sandalwood's favourite is Mandya

Traditionally, Mandya has been considered as the most important stronghold for Kannada films. One of the strongest Kannadiga dominated regions in Karnataka, it boasts of fanatic followers of Kannada cinema. Add to this, the rich political legacy of this region, it becomes the most wanted region for actors to promote their film. And with the district's platinum jubilee being celebrated this weekend, all the top stars are expected to be in this district that's sandwiched between Bengaluru and Mysuru.

Rebel star Ambareesh, who hails from the district, has been the poster boy of Mandya cinephiles, what with him being called the original Mandyada Gandu. While he is still in demand, the younger crop of actors are trying to stake their claim for being the new cut out boy for the region.

Challenging Star Darshan, who has been in the industry for over a decade, is one of the obvious heir apparent to this region. The actor, who hails from neighbouring Mysuru, has been hailed by many as the successor to Ambareesh, what with him doing a film titled Ambareesha too.

One other relatively younger stars, Yash is the other contender for the throne. Again hailing from Mysuru, he has done many films, including Mr & Mrs Ramachari and Drama, where he has particularly played to the frontbenchers in Mandya. People consider him to be someone just like them, with his humble beginning and down-to-earth approach to fans.

Another new contender to the throne is filmmaker-turned-actor Prem. Hailing from Maddur region in Mandya, he's another common man turned celebrity, who gives hope to the local boys. In fact, the maker and his wife Rakshitha were in Mandya on the opening day of his recent release, to ensure they connected with the fans.

Actress Ramya too is in the race to woo Mandya. Having represented the region as an MP once, she is currently out of the country, but has her heart set on regaining her position in the district and impressing her fans, not just with her filmi acts.
