Pawan Kumar - 'Lifeu Ishtene' (2011)

Having begun his career as an actor and screenwriter ('Manasaare' and 'Pancharangi'), Pawan ventured into direction with 'Lifeu Ishtene'. Starring Diganth, Sumyukta Hornad, Sindhu Loknath, Sathish Neenasam, and others, Pawan narrated a coming-of-age story with a unique and quirky perspective that set him apart from the rest of the talent, almost right away. While Pawan may have shot to fame through his second directorial 'Lucia', many recall his debut 'Lifeu Ishtene' fondly for it offers many memorable, and relatable moments, to the urban youth.

Suni - 'Simpallagi Ond Love Story' (2013)

'Simpallagi Ond Love Story', quite interestingly, had achieved cult status (of a kind) even before actual the film came to being. The makers had released a special 8-minute trailer before the filming began and offered a proper peek into the fun, quirky world of the film. This got the crowd talking about the many one-liners and gags and the excitement surrounding the film only intensified in the lead-up to the eventual release. 'Simpallagi Ond Love Story' grossed a credible amount at the box-office and also charmed the critics who cited it as a "must-see", fresh film.

Rakshit Shetty - 'Ulidavaru Kandanthe' (2013)

The 2013-2014 period can be deemed as a landmark phase for Rakshit Shetty who shined bright as both an actor and a filmmaker. While 'Simpallagi Ond Love Story' catapulted him to overnight fame as an actor, his directorial debut 'Ulidavaru Kandanthe' saw him raise the bar for those around with respect to creative storytelling. In the coming years, Rakshit only grew in strength to create a small league of his own wherein he operates in the capacity of not just a leading man but also as a producer, creative head, and the face of a production company.

Prashanth Neel - 'Ugramm' (2014)

Although the entire nation took notice of Prashanth Neel after 'K.G.F' came into being, it was Neel's debut feature, 'Ugramm', that catapulted him into reckoning in the local scene. Lending a new lease of life to actor Sriimurali, Prashanth Neel displayed originality and courage with one single attempt and ended up being one of the brightest talents to watch out for. Today, Prashanth boasts of film offers from all corners with producers and actors alike thronging around him for his dates.

Hemanth M. Rao - 'Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu' (2015)

A prominent member of the "new age" Kannada breed, Hemanth M. Rao has only risen in stature over the years and his debut feature, 'Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu', is a huge contributor to the credibility he has to his name today. Hemanth showcased his penchant to tell endearing, human-centric stories with 'Godhi Banna'and became one of the brightest talents to be in the reckoning. He followed it with 'Kavaludaari' and proved once again that he is here for the long haul.

Anup Bhandari - 'RangiTaranga' (2015)

Ex-techie Anup Bhandari began his directorial career with a bang in 2015. Casting his own kid brother Nirup as the lead, Anup rendered 'RangiTaranga', a landmark film in the horror genre, and quickly moved up the ranks. Although his second film, 'Rajaratha', ended up being a colossal flop, the current one in the making ('Vikrant Rona') has been creating all the right noise before its release and one expects Anup to make a solid return to form with this one.

Tharun Kishore Sudhir - 'Chowka' (2017)

There isn't a debut more confident than that of Tharun K. Sudhir who burst onto the scene with 'Chowka'. With an exciting ensemble cast in place, comprising Kashinath, Priyamani, Diganth Manchale, Vijay Raghavendra, Prem, Prajwal Devaraj, Aindrita Ray, and many others (including a cameo by the Challenging Star Darshan). Tharun also wrote the intricate screenplay, which was executed on a rather scale for a debut outing, and exuded tremendous self-assurance which enabled him to mount things on a bigger level for his second feature 'Roberrt'. The success of 'Roberrt' has made Tharun one of the biggest directors around today.

Roopa Rao - 'Gantumoote' (2018)

It's a pity that Roopa Rao features as the solitary female filmmaker on the list but her assuring debut does promise a brighter future in that regard. With a personal, coming-of-age narrative at the core, Roopa Rao's 'Gantumoote' offers a fresh gaze on the life and times of a teenaged girl. Told with care, humor, and precision, 'Gantumoote' stands tall as a one-of-a-kind film in the Kannada Film Industry.
