‘Welcome 2 Karachi’: Director talks about the film

If you have seen the trailer of Arshad Warsi and Jackky Bhagnani starrer Welcome 2 Karachi, you know that their claim of calling it “the crazzziest, wackkkiest and dumbbbest movie of the year!” might come true. While Arshad is at his wackiest best, Jackky seems to have run an extra mile to try something different and to get into the shoes of his character. Together, the duo brings you roaring fun, as far as the trailer goes. To know more about the film, we got in touch with the director of the film, Ashish R Mohan. Here’s what he told us over a telephonic conversation…

What is the film about?

Welcome 2 Karachi is a film about two people who accidentally enter Karachi, Pakistan without a passport and visa. As soon as they cross the border, they get into trouble. It is a political satire which never gets preachy. Although, there is a social message attached to it that nothing is bigger than humanity.

Arshad Warsi had told us in an interview that he is better as a serious actor than a comic actor. What would you say about that?

I think he is just being humble. The most difficult part about acting is comedy. He is a great actor and we all know how good he is at humour. Actors should not get typecast and be given different kinds of roles. Like in Sehar, Arshad was exceptionally good despite his role being serious.

What is Jackky Bhagnani like?

Jackky is very hard-working. Despite being a producer’s son, he never throws any tantrums to anyone on the set. He would keep asking if he is getting it right or not. With Welcome 2 Karachi, people will get to see his other side. His character will make one fall in love with him. I wish it proves to be a turning point of his career.

Your last film Khiladi 786 was a film where logic took backseat. But this one looks completely different. Have you changed your approach towards filmmaking?

No, I haven’t changed my approach. I am just exploring myself as a filmmaker. Welcome 2 Karachi is logical, but then again, we just intend to give pure entertainment. I make films for my audience and they should not come back disappointed. I make films with all my honesty.

A lot of critics had said that Khiladi 786 was reminiscent of Rohit Shetty’s films. How did you take that?

Although, I have assisted Rohit in the past, I never tried to copy his style while directing Khiladi 786. As I said, I am exploring myself as a filmmaker and it is a continuous learning process. My aim is to tell stories which haven’t been heard before, and to make my audience relate with them.

Do you think release of big films like Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Dil Dhadakne Do might affect your film?

No, not at all. Every film has its own audience. The people who want to watch my film will definitely come to the theatres to catch a show. I wish that every film should work. A lot of hard work goes into making films, so I wish every film does well.
