1/5

She started acting as a child in pre-Partition India

Born as Ernestine Shepherd in Lahore in 1926, Manorama began her career as a child artist in the late 1930s and appeared in films like Khazanchi (1941) before moving into lead and later character roles.

2/5

She was once a glamorous heroine before being typecast

In the 1940s and early 1950s, she played leading lady roles in several films, but by the late 1950s, she transitioned into comic and supporting characters, which became her trademark.

3/5

She had a flourishing career in Lahore before Partition

Before 1947, Manorama acted in successful Punjabi and Hindi films produced in Lahore, making her one of the few actresses whose career spanned both the pre- and post-Partition film industries.

4/5

She worked in over 100 films across genres

Known for her comic timing and distinctive screen presence, Manorama appeared in over a hundred films, including Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Ek Phool Do Mali (1969), and Half Ticket (1962), often stealing scenes from the leads.

5/5

She had a tragic personal life behind the laughter

Despite her on-screen humor, Manorama faced hardships in her personal life, including a broken marriage, and largely lived away from the limelight in her later years, passing away in 2008.
