Born in Burma, Not India
Helen was born in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar), in 1938. Her family migrated to India as refugees during World War II after facing hardships during the Japanese invasion of Burma.
Struggled with Extreme Poverty
Before her rise to fame, Helen’s early life in India was marked by poverty. She dropped out of school to support her family and took up work as a group dancer in films during the 1950s, slowly working her way up.
First Break as a Lead Dancer in ‘Howrah Bridge’
Her iconic song "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" from Howrah Bridge (1958) shot her to instant fame, marking her transition from background dancer to Bollywood’s most sought-after cabaret queen.
Married Writer-Director Salim Khan
Helen became the second wife of screenwriter Salim Khan (of Salim-Javed fame). Her graceful relationship with Salim's first family, including Salman Khan, has often been admired for its dignity and warmth.
Recipient of Padma Shri and Lifetime Achievement Awards
In recognition of her immense contribution to Indian cinema, Helen was honored with the Padma Shri in 2009, alongside several lifetime achievement awards, celebrating her role in popularizing item numbers as an art form in Bollywood.
