Born in Burma, Not India

Helen was born in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar), in 1938. Her family migrated to India as refugees during World War II after facing hardships during the Japanese invasion of Burma.

Before her rise to fame, Helen’s early life in India was marked by poverty. She dropped out of school to support her family and took up work as a group dancer in films during the 1950s, slowly working her way up.

Her iconic song "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" from Howrah Bridge (1958) shot her to instant fame, marking her transition from background dancer to Bollywood’s most sought-after cabaret queen.
