Miss India at Just 16 — Before Stardom Began

Many don't know that Nutan was crowned Miss India in 1952 — at the incredibly young age of 16. At the time, beauty pageants weren’t the glamorous industry gateways they are today, but Nutan's graceful persona and natural beauty stood out. Interestingly, she wasn't keen on entering the glamour world, but her mother, Shobhna Samarth (an actress and filmmaker herself), encouraged her to try acting. This led to Nutan’s debut in the 1950 film Hamari Beti, directed by her mother. What started as a nudge turned into one of the most illustrious film careers of all time.

She Set a Record with Five Filmfare Awards — Long Before "Women-Centric" Was a Trend

Nutan won five Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for Seema (1955), Sujata (1959), Bandini (1963), Milan (1967), and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978). Her record remained unbeaten for decades, showcasing how she dominated not just commercial cinema but the critics’ hearts too. She was known for taking on roles with depth and social significance — often playing women battling caste, injustice, or personal turmoil — setting her apart from the glamorous heroines of her time. This ability to convey vulnerability and strength in a single expression made her a director’s dream.

She Took a Break from Films Post-Marriage — and Returned Stronger Than Ever

In 1959, Nutan married Lieutenant-Commander Rajnish Bahl, a navy officer. For a while, she stepped back from acting to focus on her family and had her only child, Mohnish Bahl, who would later become a TV and film actor. At a time when marriage often spelled the end of an actress's career, Nutan made a triumphant return with powerful performances in films like Bandini — proving that a woman could balance both marriage and a meaningful acting career. Her comeback was not driven by glamour, but by roles that resonated with societal issues and emotional complexity.

She Was a Trained Classical Singer

Beyond acting, Nutan had a deep connection with music. She was a trained classical vocalist, a fact known to few. Though she never sang in mainstream Bollywood films, she often sang for herself and close family and friends. Some private recordings of her singing still exist. Her musical sensibilities added an added layer of sensitivity to her performances — especially in emotionally charged scenes where her expressions often did more than any dialogue or background score.

5/6

Her Relationship with Her Mother Was Strained

While Nutan owed her debut to her mother, the two shared a complicated relationship. Shobhna Samarth was a well-known actress and launched both Nutan and her sister Tanuja into films. However, as Nutan’s fame soared, clashes emerged over finances and personal boundaries. At one point, Nutan publicly accused her mother of mismanaging her earnings, leading to a rift that kept them estranged for years. This was highly unusual for the time when personal disputes rarely spilled into public view. Despite the fallout, Nutan remained dignified and private, rarely using the press to air grievances again.

Legacy That Transcends Generations

Nutan passed away in 1991 due to cancer, but her legacy continues to influence Indian cinema. From her nuanced expressions to her quiet rebellion against the “decorative heroine” stereotype, she carved a path few could follow. Her granddaughter Pranutan Bahl (daughter of Mohnish Bahl) has also entered the film industry — and carries a name that combines her father’s and grandmother’s, a touching nod to a legacy of elegance and depth.
