The film title that became a Bollywood omen

In an industry where every Friday decides the fate of crores, filmmakers tread carefully with everything—from casting to promotions. Yet, one particular film title has gained an infamous reputation for being "cursed." Over the years, nine films carrying this word have consistently flopped, damaging careers and causing severe financial setbacks. What began as a harmless title choice soon turned into a pattern too uncanny to ignore. This recurring streak has made many wonder whether the title itself carries bad luck.

The first strike: ‘Karz’

Subhash Ghai’s ‘Karz’ starring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Ambani and Simi Garewal is now hailed as a cult classic, but its initial fate was far from glorious. Despite iconic songs like 'Om Shanti Om' and 'Ek Hasina Thi', the film earned only around Rs 4 crore and was labelled a box-office failure. Rishi Kapoor later revealed in his autobiography that the film’s underperformance left him depressed and unsure about his future. Though its legacy grew over time, its commercial flop marked the beginning of the curse.

The domino effect continues with ‘Karz: The burden of truth’

Years later, the title resurfaced in ‘Karz: The Burden of Truth’ featuring Sunny Deol, Shilpa Shetty and Suniel Shetty. The film failed to create any buzz and reportedly made just about Rs 15 crore, becoming another disappointing entry. Audiences didn’t connect with the story, and critics offered little praise. With its lacklustre performance, the belief around the cursed title only grew stronger. It was another reminder that the name brought more trouble than triumph.

The downfall peaks with ‘Karzzzz’

The third major attempt came with ‘Karzzzz’, a remake of the original cult film, headlined by Himesh Reshammiya and Urmila Matondkar. The movie neither impressed critics nor pulled audiences to theatres, leading to severe financial losses. As stated by Bollywood Life, reports suggested that the producers were nearly driven to bankruptcy due to its disastrous performance. Urmila Matondkar’s career also suffered, pushing her away from mainstream cinema and into television judging roles. This film cemented the belief that the title was a box-office jinx.

A long list of title-based disasters

Beyond the three major films, the same word appeared in multiple other titles like ‘Karz Tere Khoon Ka’ (1988), ‘Doodh Ka Karz’ (1990), ‘Pyar Ka Karz’ (1990), ‘Karz Chukana Hai’ (1991), ‘Mahaan Karz’ (1991) and ‘Doodh Ka Karz’ (2016). None of these films found commercial success, further fuelling the superstition around the title. Each of them ended up forgotten, overshadowed by their poor performance and lack of impact. With nine consecutive box-office disasters tied to the same word, one can’t help but wonder if any filmmaker will dare to use it again.
