‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’, ‘Dangal’: Films that received government’s support

Films made on historical, social subjects and real-life personalities receive appreciation and support not only from the audience and critics but also from the government. Right from giving the movies tax exemptions to hailing the filmmakers and actors, the government has often expressed solidarity with such films. From the recent ‘The Kashmir Files’ to ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ to ‘Dangal’, here’s taking a look at FIVE films that received backing from the government.

‘The Kashmir Files’

The recent movie to be riding high on success amid overwhelming and unprecedented support from the government is none other than Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’. Apart from giving tax exemptions in many states, the government has announced other special measures to increase the audience for the film. And that includes urging the theatre owners to not hike prices of tickets, arranging for special screenings, granting half-day leaves to government employees to watch the movie and so much more. All this has resulted in the movie making a record-breaking business at the box-office.

'Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’

Om Raut’s ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ starring Ajay Devgn had garnered immense praise from the audience and the critics alike. Not only that, the period drama was even declared tax-free in states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The film, which also starred Saif Ali Khan and Kajol in lead roles, reportedly broke all records at the box-office.

‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’

Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar’s film, ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ dealt with the issue of open defecation in villages. While the state government of Haryana arranged special shows to screen the film for all village sarpanch in their respective districts, the UP government made the film tax-free in the state. ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ was reportedly the first big Bollywood release to get such a benefit in the new tax regime.

‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’

The Aditya Dhar directorial, starring Vicky Kaushal in the lead role, traces the real-life events of the 2016 Uri attack and its aftermath. The film undoubtedly received immense love and appreciation from the audience and the critics alike. The film also received support from both the Central and the State governments in the form of tax exemptions and special screenings. Apart from this, ‘Uri’ was also re-released in the state of Maharashtra on the auspicious occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas in 2019.

‘Dangal’

Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ is the story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, an amateur wrestler who trains his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari to become India's first world-class female wrestlers. The film not only impressed the audience at the box-office, but also received appreciation from many state governments. The movie was given tax exemption in states like Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Aamir was also highly praised for his decision to not release the film in Pakistan without the national anthem.

Good movies! I hope the Southern Cinema of TN, KA, AP, and Telangana also come up with movies based on true stories. They will surely do better than Deadwood.
