Madhuri Dixit Nene’s evolving OTT journey

In the 90s, Madhuri Dixit Nene was the true queen of Hindi cinema. Madhuri has successfully redefined her fame and stardom for the digital medium. While many of her previous roles were focused on glamour, Madhuri’s choices now are very much about emotional depth and complexity as an actor. For each of the projects that she has chosen since embarking on her new career, Madhuri has demonstrated that she will embrace more uncomfortable themes and darker storylines than she has previously. Let’s take a look at some of her previous work and how she continues on to produce future work through streaming.

2/7

‘The Fame Game’

Madhuri’s debut on OTT was with Netflix’s new series 'The Fame Game', which was directed by Bejoy Nambiar. In the series, Madhuri plays Anamika Anand, a famous Bollywood film star whose unexplained disappearance will reveal the brokenness of fame, family relationships and control. Through this role, Madhuri Dixit Nene was able to illustrate how there is so much fragility and moral ambiguity that exists behind the facade of an accomplished, successful person who is on public display. In addition, for Madhuri, this was the first time she had done a long-format project for the role.

3/7

Global success and renewed recognition

‘The Fame Game’ turned into an instant success, entering Netflix’s Global Top 10 list for non-English shows. The series reportedly trended in over 16 countries, reinforcing Madhuri’s global appeal even in the streaming era. Its success proved that audiences were ready to embrace her in darker, more nuanced roles. The show also opened doors for more substantial OTT opportunities.

4/7

Breaking away from the dancing diva image

Across her digital projects, Madhuri consciously moved beyond the image of a glamorous, song-and-dance icon. Her OTT characters have included emotionally scarred women, conflicted mothers, and morally complex individuals. These roles showcased her dramatic depth and willingness to deconstruct her own legacy. The shift underlined her focus on storytelling over stardom.

5/7

‘Maja Ma’

Her second OTT outing was Amazon Prime Video’s original film ‘Maja Ma’, directed by Anand Tiwari. In the film, Madhuri played Pallavi Patel, a traditional middle-aged housewife whose seemingly ideal family life is upended by the revelation of a deeply personal truth. The film addressed themes of sexuality, self-acceptance, and social conditioning with sensitivity. Madhuri’s restrained performance earned praise for its honesty and warmth.

6/7

‘Mrs. Deshpande’

Madhuri was next seen in JioHotstar’s ‘Mrs. Deshpande’, inspired by the French thriller ‘La Mante’. Directed by a yet-unannounced team, the series featured her as a convicted serial killer who assists the police in tracking down a copycat criminal. Stripped of glamour, the role demanded psychological intensity and emotional coldness. It remains one of her darkest and most unconventional performances to date.

7/7

What’s next with ‘Maa Behen’?

Up next, Dixit will appear in Netflix’s dark comedy ‘Maa Behen’, where she stars alongside Triptii Dimri and Ravi Kishan. Directed by an upcoming filmmaker, the film revolves around a dysfunctional family forced to hide a crime, leading to chaos and dark humour. The project continues her streak of genre experimentation on OTT. Audiences are curious to see her comic timing blend with morally grey storytelling.
