Mala Sinha Was Born as Alda Sinha

While the world knows her as Mala Sinha, she was originally named Alda Sinha, born into a Christian Nepali family in Kolkata. The name “Mala” was given to her by actress Geeta Bali, who recommended it to make her sound more “filmi.”

2/5

She Started as a Child Singer

Before she became a successful actress, Mala was a trained singer. As a child, she regularly sang on All India Radio and recorded several songs for Bengali records. Singing was her first love, and she was known for her strong classical base.

3/5

She Was Once Rejected for Not Being ‘Fair Enough’

In her early career, some filmmakers rejected her citing she wasn’t “fair-skinned” enough to be a lead heroine. However, Mala broke that stereotype and went on to become a top actress of the 1950s and 60s, known for her acting skills and expressive eyes.

4/5

She Was Among the First Feminist Icons in Hindi Cinema

Mala often chose bold, unconventional roles where her characters were strong, independent women—something rare in that era. Films like Dhool Ka Phool, Anpadh, and Gumrah portrayed her in layered, emotional, and socially challenging roles that set her apart from many contemporaries.

5/5

She Balanced Two Film Industries at Once

While she dominated Bollywood, Mala Sinha also had a thriving career in Bengali cinema, working with legends like Uttam Kumar. She was one of the few actresses of her time who could navigate both industries successfully—often juggling shooting schedules in Mumbai and Kolkata.
