Bollywood stars who bounced back stronger after setbacks

Bollywood may appear glamorous on the surface, but even its biggest stars step away when life demands a pause. Whether due to personal milestones, career setbacks, or unexpected circumstances, several actors have taken sabbaticals only to return stronger than ever. Their comebacks not only reignited their careers but also reminded audiences why they remain unforgettable forces on screen.

2/8

Shah Rukh Khan

After the underwhelming response to ‘Zero’ (2018), Shah Rukh Khan chose to step back and reassess his journey, focusing on family and future choices. His return with ‘Pathaan’ (2023), directed by Siddharth Anand, marked a massive comeback. Co-starring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, the high-octane action thriller shattered box office records and reaffirmed his unmatched star power.

3/8

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan took a hiatus following ‘Guzaarish’ (2010) after welcoming her daughter. She made a striking return with ‘Jazbaa’ (2015), directed by Sanjay Gupta, where she played a fierce lawyer alongside Irrfan Khan. She later impressed audiences in Karan Johar’s romantic drama ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and the musical drama ‘Fanney Khan’, proving her enduring screen presence.

4/8

Rani Mukerji

Rani Mukerji stepped away after ‘Mardaani’ (2014) to focus on her personal life. She returned with ‘Hichki’ (2018), directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, portraying a teacher with Tourette’s syndrome. The film, co-starring Neeraj Kabi, earned both critical and commercial success. She continued the momentum with ‘Mardaani 2’, once again showcasing her strength in content-driven cinema.

5/8

Sanjay Dutt

Sanjay Dutt’s career paused due to legal troubles, leading to a prolonged absence until his release in 2016. He returned with ‘Bhoomi’ (2017), directed by Omung Kumar, alongside Aditi Rao Hydari. While the film received mixed reviews, Dutt found renewed success with roles in ‘Kalank’, ‘Prassthanam’, and especially ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, where his portrayal of Adheera stood out.

6/8

Sridevi

After stepping away post her marriage, the late actress Sridevi made a remarkable return with ‘English Vinglish’ (2012), directed by Gauri Shinde. The film, co-starring Adil Hussain, told a simple yet powerful story of self-worth. Her performance received widespread acclaim. She continued her impactful second innings with ‘Mom’ and ‘Puli’, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

7/8

Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri Dixit moved to the US after marriage, taking a long break from films after ‘Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam’. She returned with ‘Aaja Nachle’ (2007), directed by Anil Mehta. Though the film didn’t perform strongly, her presence was appreciated. She later delivered notable performances in ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ and ‘Gulaab Gang’, reaffirming her timeless charm.

8/8

Kajol

Kajol stepped back after ‘Fanaa’ (2006) to focus on family life. Her return with ‘My Name Is Khan’ (2010), directed by Karan Johar and co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, was both critically and commercially successful. She continued to balance roles in films like ‘Dilwale’ and ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’, proving her versatility across genres.
