'RRR' to '2.0': Indian films that were shot in Ukraine

Russia has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine that opened with air and missile strikes on Ukrainian military facilities before the troops and tanks rolled across the borders from the north, east and south. This situation has left the entire world worried. Russian President Vladimir Putin has even warned other countries that any attempt to interfere with the Russian action would lead to consequences.


Did you know that Ukraine has been a popular choice of filmmakers for shooting their films? Yes, you read that right. Let's take a look at Indian films that were shot in Ukraine.

'RRR'

The cast and crew of SS Rajamouli's upcoming film 'RRR' starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR had jetted off to Ukraine to begin the last schedule of the film, last year. The film also stars Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, Shriya Saran and Olivia Morris in key roles. The film is based on the tale of Indian freedom fighters- Komaram Bheem and Alluri Seetharama Raju.

'2.0'

A song from Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson's '2.0' was shot in Ukraine. The song featured Rajinikanth and Amy. The team had flown to Ukraine to record some breathtaking scenic locations to recreate the same in India using visual effects.

'Dev'

The 2019 Tamil romantic film, 'Dev' that starred Karthi and Rakul Preet Singh, with Prakash Raj and Ramya Krishnan, was also shot in Ukraine. The film's plot is inspired by the life of former Indian cricket captain and star all-rounder Kapil Dev. Apart from Ukraine, it was extensively shot in areas such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Kullu, Manali, Himalayas, Gulmarg and the Carpathian Mountains. The shoot was wrapped around early November 2018 in Ukraine.

'99 SONGS'

AR Rahman's '99 songs' was shot in Ukraine as well. The film starred Ehan Bhat and Edilsy Vargas in lead roles, alongside Aditya Seal, Lisa Ray and Manisha Koirala among others as supporting characters. The film is based on the life of a struggling singer who wants to be a successful music composer.

'Winner'

Three songs of the film 'Winner' were shot in Ukraine. Helmed by Gopichand Malineni, the film featured Sai Dharam Tej, Rakul Preet Singh and Jagapati Babu. It was shot extensively in Kyiv, Lviv and Istanbul. Director Gopichand had claimed that 'Winner' is the first Indian film to be shot in Ukraine.
