Ravi Kishan on 'Laapataa Ladies' Oscar selection: Aamir Khan wanted to play my role; Kiran Rao was adamant
Veteran actor and politician Ravi Kishan has been hosting a segment of Bigg Boss 18. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, the star shared his excitement on the new gig and also expressed his joy and gratitude following the selection of his movie 'Laapataa Ladies' being selected as India's official entry to the Oscars 2024.
Describing the honour as a 'dream come true', Kishan shared, "I had never thought that I would reach the Oscars with 'Laapataa Ladies'. It was a dream."
When asked if he had ever imagined such success for his films, he candidly replied, "Never! I had thought about the National Award, thanks to Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan."
Interestingly, as he credited filmmaker Kiran Rao for her vision and support, he shared intriguing insights about the casting process. The veteran star revealed that Aamir, who is also a producer of the film, was keen on playing the role he eventually portrayed. Revealing a surprising behind-the-scenes detail, Kishan said, "More importantly, thanks to Kiran, who was adamant that ‘I want Ravi Kishan.’ Aamir Khan himself wanted to play the role, so hats off to that lady."
Kishan, known for his work in regional and Bollywood films, sees this milestone as a testament to perseverance in the film industry. "It’s a surprise that I have reached the Oscars. Ravi Kishan, who was once considered an underdog or just a superstar of regional cinema, has proven that no one should be underestimated. Everyone deserves a chance. I got my chance, and I gave it 1,000%."
The actor also extended thanks to his fans and the industry for their unwavering support throughout his 34-year career. “The industry has given me opportunities, and for that, I say, ‘Thank you.’ My fans have never left me. They know that no matter what the film is, Ravi will entertain.”
Highlighting his past contributions to cinema and upcoming projects, including his role in 'Singham' and the anticipated second season of 'Maamla Legal Hai', he concluded saying, "God has been kind."
'Laapataa Ladies' sees Kishan playing the role of a witty police inspector. According to the actor, "This film represents India, and now the world will see how 80 per cent of our villages and rural areas are progressing. This film showcases how daughters fight for their dreams, which really touched me."
'Laapataa Ladies' is set to contend in the Best International Film category. The official list of nominations for the Oscars will be revealed on Friday, January 17, 2025. The 97th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
