JP Dutta, film-maker, on making another war film after Border:
What makes LoC — Kargil different from your earlier war movies?
My last film, Border, was one of the finest war films to emerge from Bollywood.
This time round, I am telling the story of five battalions involved in five different battles. LoC — Kargil is certainly a tough movie to make.
What inspired you to make another war movie after Border?
Actually, the Indian Army, after watching Border, wanted me to make the film. I didn’t want to go back and shoot another war film. But the Army asked me to come over and placed the facts before me. After that, I couldn’t say ‘no’, and started entertaining the thought of making the film. Then, the Army asked me to visit Leh in the month of February, when the area is terribly cold. It is only after I came back from Leh that I decided the story must be told.
How would you explain the elaborate star cast?
Everybody — from Ajay Devgan and Sunil Shetty to Akshaye Khanna and Abhishek Bachchan — features in LoC —Kargil. They were more than willing to do the film. For an actor, playing a character who died fighting for the country just two years ago is a dream role.
How supportive has the Army been as regards the movie?
The Army has been most supportive of my venture. It has supplied me with whatever I want, but strictly on a payment basis. It is nice of the government to pull out so many troops and keep them at my disposal.
The terrain and temperature apart, what kind of problems did you face while making the movie?
The initial problem was that the output of work was low due to the altitude. At another level, what hurt me was that while I was trying to pay tribute to those who had sacrificed their lives for our country, little sensitivity was shown to the effort. After Border I was given security cover because I faced threats to my life. Am I insane to make another war film?
