Patriotic Bollywood films from the 1990s

The 1990s were considered the golden age of patriotic Bollywood films that combined heartfelt stories with heroic action. Movies that are set in wartime on the frontlines, or within the confines of a corrupt society, struck a resonant chord with audiences across India as they intertwined brilliant characters with superb acting, providing songs that would leave a goose bump, or feeling of national pride, all collectively inspired.

2/7

China Gate (1998)

Inspired by 'The Magnificent Seven' this ensemble drama follows the story of a group of ex-army officers who make a plan and take upon themselves to protect a village from dacoits. The film stars Om Puri and Amrish Puri and celebrates military glory, justice and redemption for soldiers. China Gate has great action and excitement but centres on the bond and emotional things soldiers must face after war and a life of combat.

3/7

Roja (1992, Hindi Dub)

Roja, directed by Mani Ratnam tells the dramatic story of a village girl whose husband is kidnapped by militants in Kashmir. A gripping tale of her relentless struggle for his freedom set against the backdrop of political crisis, the movie featured a haunting soundtrack by A.R. Rahman. The story showed patriotism through characters making personal sacrifices and showing emotional strength.

4/7

Tirangaa (1993)

This action drama stars Raj Kumar and Nana Patekar as soldiers racing against time to stop a foreign threat. A great film with terrific dialogues and great performances. Tirangaa is a classic action-packed drama, celebrated as a cult patriotic thriller, featuring strong old-school heroic themes.

5/7

Sarfarosh (1999)

Aamir Khan portrays the honest officer, ACP Ajay Singh Rathod, as he uncovers a cross-border terrorism network. Sarfarosh powerfully tackles the serious issue of rising insurgency in India with honest, investigative filmmaking. Naseeruddin Shah's realistic and nuanced villainy adds intensity and grit, making the film a gripping take on patriotism.

6/7

Krantiveer (1994)

Nana Patekar gave a blistering performance as Pratap Narayan Tilak, a man willing to take on political corruption and the status quo of injustice without fear. The movie's searing dialogue and raw energy transformed it into a clarion call for social change and made it one of the most powerful social dramas of the 1990s.

7/7

Border (1997)

J P Dutta's war epic showcases the real-life events of the Battle of Longewala during the 1971 Indo Pak war. Sunny Deol leads a cast of soldiers defending a secluded post against enormous odds of enemy forces. The film shows realistic battle sequences, with the emotional backstories of its characters and also combines the soulful music to stir up feelings of nationalism. Border was the greatest patriotic landmark, and the highest grossing film of the decade.
