1/5

A career that began far from the camera

Before cinema entered his life, Sujit Kumar was studying law and seriously envisioned himself as a lawyer. His destiny shifted during college when he met director Phani Majumdar, who was struck by his commanding voice and assured presence, leading to his debut in ‘Taxi Driver’.

2/5

Slow yet steady rise

At the beginning of his career, he played a variety of character types, including supporting roles as friends, antagonists, and mysterious individuals. Due to many films such as ‘Honeymoon’, he gained visibility within the industry, and by the 1960's, he had developed an excellent reputation within the suspense/thriller genres in film. When he starred in ‘China Town’, his screen identity changed greatly when he became a police officer. The seriousness of his appearance combined with the seriousness of his voice and actions established him as the foremost police inspector in Hindi films.

3/5

A uniform that defined an era

From the memorable ‘Ittefaq’ to films such as ‘Amiri Garibee’, ‘The Burning Train’, ‘Takkar’, ‘Boxer’, ‘Qaidi’, ‘Haqiqat’, ‘Tiranga’ and ‘Krantiveer’, Sujit Kumar repeatedly returned to the khaki uniform, earning a reputation for portraying the honest, no-nonsense cop more often than almost any actor of his time.

4/5

Close bonds with Rajesh Khanna

A frequent presence in Rajesh Khanna-led films like ‘Aradhana’, ‘Aan Milo Sajna’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Roti’ and ‘Amrit’, Sujit Kumar shared a deep friendship with the superstar. Off-screen, he was equally close to Jeetendra, Rakesh Roshan, Saawan Kumar Tak and Randhir Kapoor.

5/5

Bhojpuri stardom and legacy

Apart from Hindi films, Sujit Kumar emerged as a major force in Bhojpuri cinema with titles such as ‘Ganga Maiya Tohe Pyari’, ‘Bidesiya’ and ‘Dangal’. He later turned producer with films like ‘Khel’ and ‘Champion’ and was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, leaving behind a legacy that extended well beyond his iconic police roles.
