Most memorable fantasy films

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt's Brahmastra is a definite call out to the fantasy genre. It's the perfect reason to recall some of India's most memorable fantasy films. This eclectic list includes some new films and some really old gems, too. There are some obvious additions here like the Baahubali movies, but there are also some hidden gems like Dilip Kumar's Uran Khatola. Read on to find out which fantasy films from the past and present make a must-watch list for movie buffs.

2/6

Baahubali 1 and 2

The Baahubali franchise is the most successful film franchise of India and there's good reason for this distinction. These mythical movies about an honest king and his historic past have made names like Prabhas, SS Rajamouli, Sathyaraj, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah a part of Indian movie history.

3/6

Magadheera

Another entry from SS Rajamouli, Magadheera was the pre-Baahubali gem that added to the star power of Ram Charan. This action adventure featured kings, swords and wars long before these elements became popular with genre hits like Game Of Thrones. To date, this adventure epic remains a compelling watch on OTT platforms.

4/6

Ajooba

One of the 90s most memorable fantasy films, Ajooba features Amitabh Bachchan as a vigilante meets Robin Hood-esque character. Of course, there's the quintessential back story with an evil wazir and nobel king, all of which ties up into the lead character's swashbuckling escapades pretty well.

5/6

Uran Khatola

An absolute forgotten gem from the 1950s, this unique story features Dilip Kumar, who crashes into a city ruled by women. Not only was it rare to have a concept of an entire fictional city ruled by women, with a powerful Queen, but it also paid heed to the female gaze, long before it became the norm.

6/6

Brahmastra

The latest addition to the fantasy genre, Brahmastra features the story of a young man who is thrown in the midst of an epic battle. With an ensemble cast that includes Ranbir, Alia, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy, promises a lot of genre goodness.
