1/5

A beauty and brains combination

Leela Chitnis was one of the first educated female actors in India. As the daughter of an English professor, she had obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. This was incredibly rare for an actress aspiring to join the world of movies, and she legitimized herself as an intellectual in the early, glamorous world of movies. Now that is a gender stereotype breaker!

2/5

The dynamic duo

She had a recognizable pairing with Ashok Kumar, and their chemistry was visible in the films they starred in together, such as Azad (1940), Bandhan (1940), and Jhoola (1941). In fact, Ashok Kumar had candidly confessed that she had taught him how to express himself with his eyes!

3/5

The face of Lux

In 1941, Leela Chitnis became the first Indian film star to endorse Lux soap. Before her, the brand had only ever used top Hollywood actresses in its campaigns. Her ad opened the floodgates for scores of Bollywood celebrities to become brand ambassadors, thus altering the Indian advertising and celebrity endorsement landscape forever.

4/5

From stage to matriarch

Leela Chitnis actually began her career in theater. She subsequently turned to films, performing a variety of roles, even as an extra, in order to support her four sons following her divorce. While she started her career as a leading lady, she was particularly noted for playing the martyr mother roles of stars such as Dilip Kumar in movies like Shaheed.

5/5

A long and dignified life

She acted until the late 1980s, then retired and moved to the United States to be closer to her children. She passed away in 2003 at the age of 93. She remains an institution of resilience, intellect, and trailblazing spirit from the golden age of Indian cinema.
