'Hera Pheri' to 'KGF 1' - Movies rejected by Sanjay Dutt

Sanjay Dutt, the original rockstar of Bollywood, has had a career filled with unforgettable roles and bold choices. Over the years, Dutt has rejected some blockbuster films — roles that went on to shape the careers of other major stars. From epic dramas to cult comedies, these films left a mark on Indian cinema.

Had he taken them, we might’ve seen an entirely different cinematic landscape.

'Hera Pheri'

Sanjay Dutt was the original choice for the role of Shyam in 'Hera Pheri.' He exited due to health issues and scheduling conflicts.

Suniel Shetty stepped in and the trio with Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal, created comedy gold. The film flopped initially but later became a cult classic through television reruns. Today, it’s one of the most loved comedies in Bollywood history.

'KGF: Chapter 1'

Before it became a pan-India phenomenon, 'KGF' makers offered the role of villain Garuda to Sanjay Dutt. He declined, unsure of the film’s potential and fate. The role went to Ramachandra Raju, while Yash became a household name. The film’s gritty tone and powerful dialogues struck a chord across the country. Dutt later joined 'KGF: Chapter 2' as Adheera.

4/6

'Chak De! India'

The inspiring role of Kabir Khan was first offered to Sanjay Dutt. He turned it down reportedly due to personal issues and disinterest in sports films. Shah Rukh Khan took on the challenge and delivered a career-defining performance. The film became a national anthem for team spirit and girl power.

It won the National Award and is still considered one of SRK’s best.

5/6

'Baahubali'

Sanjay Dutt was offered the role of Kattapa in 'Baahubali.' He turned it down as he was serving his jail period. The makers said while Prabhas was their first priority but they considered Dutt for role of Kattapa. The film broke box office records and created a cinematic universe. Its success opened the gates for pan-India storytelling.

Dutt missed being part of a cultural revolution.

6/6

'Pyaar kiya to darna kya'

Sohail Khan originally approached Sanjay Dutt to play the elder brother Suraj. Dutt liked the script but opted out because he didnt want to do supporting roles at that time. The role went to Salman Khan who shared incredible chemistry with Arbaaz Khan. The film’s songs, humor and family emotions made it a superhit.

It was one of the defining rom-coms of the ’90s.
