Ghajini and the Birth of the ‘100-Crore Club’ in India

In 2008, Aamir Khan’s Ghajini, directed by AR Murugadoss, not only set the box office ablaze but also made history as the first Indian film to net over ₹100 crore in domestic collections. This landmark achievement gave birth to what is now famously known as Bollywood’s ‘100-crore club.’ However, few know that this domestic milestone was preceded by an international one achieved decades earlier.

Disco Dancer – The True First ₹100-Crore Film Worldwide

Long before Ghajini, the 1982 dance-action entertainer Disco Dancer had already crossed the ₹100 crore mark globally. Initially a sleeper hit in India, it grossed ₹6.42 crore domestically, a huge number for its time. The film’s real magic unfolded overseas, where it became an unprecedented sensation in the Soviet Union.

Soviet Union Success That Made History

Released in the USSR in 1984, Disco Dancer created a cultural wave. Packed theatres, weeks-long runs, and an unparalleled craze made it one of the biggest Indian hits abroad. The movie earned an astonishing 60 million Soviet Rubles—equivalent to ₹94.42 crore—just in the Soviet market. Combined with its Indian earnings, the worldwide total reached ₹100.82 crore, making it the first Indian movie ever to achieve this feat.

A Breakthrough for Mithun Chakraborty

When Disco Dancer hit the screens, Mithun Chakraborty was still a newcomer trying to find his footing in the industry. The film’s blockbuster success catapulted him into superstardom, giving him an iconic on-screen persona and establishing him as the ultimate ‘dancing hero’ of Indian cinema.

Outshining Sholay and Holding the Crown Until the 90s

Remarkably, Disco Dancer outperformed the legendary Sholay—which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, and Hema Malini—to become the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide. The record stood unbroken until 1994, when Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit’s Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! surpassed it with ₹135 crore in global collections. Written by celebrated poet Rahi Masoom Raza and helmed by Babbar Subhash, the film also featured Om Puri, Om Shivpuri, Gita Siddharth, Karan Razdan, and a cameo by superstar Rajesh Khanna.
