A Desperate Bid for Treatment

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Madhubala was battling a congenital heart condition known as a ventricular septal defect—a hole in the heart. As her health deteriorated, her doctors advised her to seek advanced treatment abroad. The United States had the best cardiac facilities at the time, offering her the only real chance at survival.

Her Application Made Headlines

News that India’s most glamorous star was applying for a US visa quickly became a sensation. The press covered every detail, speculating about whether she would leave the country permanently or return after treatment. Fans were heartbroken at the thought of losing her, even temporarily.

3/5

Passport and Bureaucratic Delays

Though her visa application was medically justified, the process was not smooth. Reports suggest she faced delays in getting clearances, as authorities were cautious about approving travel for someone of her stature, fearing public uproar if anything went wrong. Her fragile health made the wait especially nerve-wracking for her family.

4/5

A Tumultuous Personal Life Added Pressure

During this period, Madhubala’s personal life was equally turbulent. She was estranged from Dilip Kumar, and her marriage to Kishore Kumar was strained due to her worsening illness. The stress of her broken relationships and her illness made the US visa and the hope of treatment feel even more urgent and symbolic—a last chance at healing her body and her spirit.

5/5

Treatment and Return

Madhubala eventually received the visa and traveled to London and the US in 1960 for medical consultations. Unfortunately, doctors declared her condition inoperable. She returned to India with little hope of recovery. Though the trip did not save her, it underscored how beloved she was—her fight for life captured the imagination and sympathy of millions.
