Parineeta

Pradeep Sarkar’s Parineeta beautifully adapted the 1914 Bengali novella into a lyrical film that displays the beauty of 1960s Kolkata. Starring Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, and Sanjay Dutt, it held on to the delicate emotions of the original, exploring love, pride, and misunderstandings. The minute period detailing of the movie, the soulful music, and refined performances made it a rare adaptation that surely did justice to its true literary essence.

Devdas

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s masterpiece of the theatrical version of 'Devdas' transformed the tragic novel into a visual delight. With a niche cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit, the film lifted the story of doomed love into a cultural masterpiece. While Bhansali added his own dramatic expertise, the film captured the essence of longing and despair that made the movie a timeless triumph.

3 Idiots

Rajkumar Hirani’s '3 Idiots' may have remarkably deviated from the book, but its core essence—outlining the rigid Indian education system—remained intact. There is no doubt that Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi with their heart-touching acting, brought humor and heart to the story, making the movie a record-breaking hit. For this particular instance, the adaptation arguably surpassed the book in popularity and cultural impact.

4/6

Kai Po Che

Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the film is adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s novel, 'The 3 Mistakes of My Life'. The movie is a masterpiece of an intriguing tale of friendship, dreams, and communal tensions in Gujarat. Spotlighting Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkummar Rao, and Amit Sadh, it kept a perfect balance of personal stories with social commentary. The film’s raw emotion and practicality gave the story a new depth, making it one of the strongest adaptations of Bhagat’s works.

Maqbool and Omkara

Vishal Bhardwaj merits particular attention for his Shakespeare trilogy. 'Maqbool', with Irrfan Khan and Tabu, revisited 'Macbeth' in the Mumbai underworld, while 'Omkara', with Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, and Kareena Kapoor, converted 'Othello' into the outlook of rural India. Both films splendidly displayed Shakespeare’s universal themes of ambition, jealousy, and betrayal, showcasing the perseverance of literary traditions globally.

6/6

Lootera

Starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha, Vikramaditya Motwane’s 'Lootera' was a tender, atmospheric film that expanded Henry’s short story 'The last Leaf' into a layered love tale. With its touching music and lyrical depictions, it captured the spirit of sacrifice and hope, making a profound impression on audiences.
