Bollywood’s monsters that haunted the silver screen with iconic terror

From haunted witches to friendly aliens and eerie dolls, Bollywood’s take on horror and fantasy has birthed some unforgettable monsters. These chilling creations that are sometimes creepy, sometimes campy, have left a lasting mark on the Indian horror genre. Blending desi superstition with global horror influences, these creatures aren’t just figments of nightmares—they’re cinematic legends.

2/7

The possessed witch: ‘Veerana’ (1988)

Ramsay Brothers’ cult classic 'Veerana' gave Bollywood one of its most iconic horror figures—Jasmin, the possessed young woman. Under demonic influence, she lures men into secluded areas and kills them with cold blood, her eerie beauty hiding monstrous intent. With haunting music and vintage horror aesthetics, Jasmin became the quintessential Bollywood witch, still referenced decades later. The film set the tone for 80s Indian horror and still haunts nostalgic viewers.

3/7

The vengeful spirit: ‘Stree’ (2018)

'Stree' gave Indian horror a fresh spin by mixing chills with social satire. The ghost of a woman abducts men, leaving behind only their clothes, turning the town of Chanderi into a haunted territory. Inspired by urban legends, Stree’s invisible yet omnipresent terror created fear through absence. Her name alone sparked dread and laughter in a film that redefined modern Bollywood horror. The catchphrase “O Stree, kal aana” became iconic overnight.

4/7

The chilling tale of ‘Mahakaal’ (1994)

A desi nod to Freddy Krueger, 'Mahakaal' introduced Shakaal, a terrifying, clawed killer who haunts and kills his victims in their dreams. The film mirrored Western slasher horror but wrapped it in Indian tropes, adding dramatic family backstories and intense supernatural twists. With grotesque makeup and eerie dream sequences, Shakaal became Bollywood’s own version of a nightmare monster, terrifying viewers long after the credits rolled.

5/7

The bewitched doll: ‘Papi Gudia’ (1996)

Taking inspiration from Child’s Play, 'Papi Gudia' tells the story of a criminal spirit who possesses a doll and continues his killing spree post-execution. As the doll begins to kill, horror intensifies with scenes of possessed toys and innocent victims. Although low on budget, the film became infamous for its creepy concept, establishing the evil doll trope in Indian horror. It remains a guilty pleasure among 90s horror fans

6/7

The invisible predator: ‘Agyaat’ (2009)

Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, 'Agyaat' follows a film crew stranded in a dense jungle, stalked by an unseen entity. The fear comes not from what is shown but from what remains hidden—echoing the atmospheric horror of 'The Blair Witch Project.' With tension mounting and bodies dropping, the forest becomes a deadly maze. Its clever use of suspense over gore gave it a unique place in Indian horror.

7/7

The cursed creature: ‘Purana Mandir’ (1984)

One of Bollywood’s earliest horror hits, 'Purana Mandir' introduced Samri—a demon released from a centuries-old curse. The film followed a family’s terrifying battle to end the bloodline curse that awakens the monster. With chilling temple sequences and demonic resurrection, it was pure vintage horror. Samri’s grotesque look and haunting laugh became the stuff of nightmares. The film still holds up as one of the most influential horror entries in Indian cinema.
