Behind the villain’s mask, Ranjeet’s real story will surprise you

Ranjeet, born Gopal Bedi, entered films with hopes of playing the hero. However, after his intense negative role in Sharmeelee (1971), he was instantly typecast as a villain. Ironically, this unintended turn brought him massive fame and a long-lasting career.

While he portrayed hundreds of menacing roles — often as the molester-villain in 70s and 80s cinema — Ranjeet in real life is known to be gentle, soft-spoken, and humorous. He once joked that women were scared to even greet him at parties because of his on-screen image.

Behind the scenes, Ranjeet was part of Bollywood’s inner circle. He shared deep friendships with actors like Dharmendra, Rishi Kapoor, and Jeetendra, and was a regular at industry parties, known for his wit and camaraderie.

Not many know that Ranjeet is a national-level swimmer and an excellent cook. In his free time, he enjoys whipping up dishes for friends and family. He even considered opening a restaurant once!

Ranjeet’s daughter Divyanka Bedi once showed interest in films, but he discouraged her, citing the industry's unpredictability and pressures. He preferred she stay away from the glare he once faced daily.
