The benchmark after ‘Sholay’

Following the groundbreaking success of ‘Sholay,’ which obliterated all previous box office records and became the highest-grossing Indian film of its time, Ramesh Sippy felt the weight of expectations to outdo himself. Eager to elevate the stakes, he set out to create ‘Shaan,’ envisioned as a spectacular action thriller in the vein of a James Bond film, featuring a stellar ensemble of top-tier stars.

2/5

A star-studded lineup

According to DNA, Ramesh Sippy wanted to unite the original Sholay actors by asking Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, and Hema Malini to play the main roles. Amitabh agreed to participate, but the other members declined his offer. Sunil Dutt, along with Shashi Kapoor and Bindiya Goswami, received the final casting choices. The film featured an outstanding cast, which included Raakhee Gulzar, Parveen Babi, Johnny Walker, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda, to create a star-studded production that stood out among films from that period.

3/5

A lavish production and grand expectations

The writing team Salim-Javed created the screenplay for ‘Shaan,’ which debuted in theaters on December 12, 1980. The film had a production budget of Rs.6 crore, which doubled the cost of ‘Sholay.’ The production represented the most expensive Indian film ever produced at that time. The film failed to meet the high expectations that its famous predecessor had established even though it delivered impressive action scenes, outstanding visual effects, and a massive production scale.

4/5

Critical and commercial reception

The movie began its theatrical run with strong ticket sales but received mixed reviews, which led to negative word-of-mouth that caused its box office performance to decline rapidly. The movie received great production values, yet it failed to perform well at the box office because it earned only Rs.4.50 crore in India. The film failed to reach the box office success of ‘Sholay,’ which led to its classification as a box office disaster.

5/5

Cult status and lasting legacy

Shaan has gained dedicated followers because it has continued to air regularly on television networks since its initial release. The music created by R.D. Burman achieved timeless status through his work on classic songs including 'Yamma Yamma,' 'Jaanu Meri Jaan,' 'Pyaar Karne Wale,' and 'Doston Se Pyar Kiya.' The Filmfare Award for Best Music eluded Burman when Karz won, but the film achieved the Best Cinematography award, which confirmed its status as a cult classic with outstanding visuals and musical excellence.
