A Star Who Shined Late, But Bright

A. K. Hangal’s journey into cinema didn’t begin until he was 52 years old, with his debut in Teesri Kasam (1966). Before that, he was deeply involved in political activism and theatre. Despite the late start, he went on to feature in over 200 films, earning admiration for his warm, dignified portrayals in classics like Sholay, Bawarchi, and Namak Haraam.

More Than Just a Character Actor

Though often cast in supporting roles, Hangal brought depth and humanity to every character he played. His performance as the blind father in Sholay, remembered for the line “Itna sannata kyun hai bhai?”, is still etched in the memories of Indian film lovers—proof that even small roles can leave a lasting impact.

A Freedom Fighter Before Becoming an Actor

Born in 1914 in Sialkot (now in Pakistan), Hangal was active in the freedom movement from his youth. His socialist ideals led to his imprisonment in Karachi after the Partition. Post-release, he moved to Bombay, where he joined the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and built a respected career in theatre and films alongside greats like Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi.

Struggles in His Final Years

Despite his decades-long contribution to Indian cinema, Hangal faced severe financial and health issues in old age. After suffering a serious fall in 2012, he was hospitalized and later placed on life support. With limited savings and high medical expenses, his family struggled to afford his treatment—drawing attention only after media reports surfaced.

A Quiet End to a Storied Life

Hangal passed away on August 26, 2012, at the age of 95. His death marked the end of a powerful era in Indian cinema. Though tributes poured in from across the industry, his last days were spent in near-obscurity, reminding the world how easily legends can be forgotten when the spotlight fades.
